Mark's Remarks 2/15/09

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend. I didn’t forget. But neither did I do it justice. Romance has changed a good deal. Several I’ve visited have met their fiances on something like eharmony.com. They describe a variation on the decades-old computer matching game, only this time using the internet. I suppose you know how it goes. You answer a bevy of questions. You list your likes and dislikes followed by your desires and needs. You identify the top five things that attract you. Then you add the top five things that repulse you. Somebody creates a profile. Then the profile is made part of a network. Truth be told, I’m quite impressed with how sophisticated this whole process has become.
One fellow described his experience. Once his data was made available to the general public, he got eighty hits on his profile. From the eighty hits, he got twenty-two extended internet conversations with females. From the twenty-two extended conversations, he got ten first dates. From the ten first dates, he got one second date. And the second date failed to yield a third date. Which was when he decided to redo his profile. Starting from scratch, he was more successful in the second round. He met Wanda Wonderful. And they were married.
No matter how perfect the methodology, it can't guarantee chemistry. "I don't know why I love you like I do. I don't know why, I just do." That sounded stupid when someone sang it half a century ago. But we haven't gotten far beyond it since.
If you have a love, love him or her well, as Jesus did, in a servant like manner. Minister to your husband/wife. When that happens mutually, it is wonderful to behold. If you’re single at this time, you never know what might happen. God has a whole category of individuals who might be your “soul-mate.” Regardless, it takes lots of time and cultivation. Being a minister isn’t just for preachers.

Surely enjoyed our Boy Scout Sunday last week. I believe it’s the best one I’ve ever experienced. A big thank you to the Scouts for a $500 donation!
