LUMY 02/08/09

This Summer, LUMY is teaming up with the Dirt Team folks to plan our Mission Trip. We are working with the Methodist Conference, and in doing this we need someone to come along to prepare our meals. We will be heading back down to the New Orleans area to continue cleanup from August 1st to the 8th. If you would be interested in going on this trip as a cook for the team, please contact Andrew or Sarah at your earliest convenience. Thanks!
Bible Study- If you haven’t been here yet for Bible Study, check it out this Wednesday. 8th-12th-graders meet from 5-6pm in Study Center 4. We get dinner as part of Wednesday night supper before the study and bring it over. 6th-and 7th-graders meet from 6:15-7pm in Study Center 5 (The LUMY Room). In this Bible Study we are learning about discernment and how to use it concerning media and its influence. For more information check out: http://cpyu.org/Default.aspx.

On Super Bowl Sunday LUMY and Pleasant Valley Baptist youth teamed up to do a canned food drive for In As Much Ministry, and to watch the Super Bowl. We collected around 8,000 items from the city of Liberty...which is awesome! We had around 40 students join us and the night was a HUGE success filled with game watching, game playing, eating and laughing.

Tonight we are hosting the NYU, Northland Youth United. This is a time for all of the Methodist Youth Groups in the Northland get together to worship. All LUMY meets from 6:00-7:30pm tonight. There will be a 30-Hour Famine meeting right after for 8th-12th graders who are interested.
30-Hour Famine-30-Hour Famine is for 8th-12th-graders and will be held on Feb 26th-27th through the night. This is an event where students can choose to “Starve for Food.” It is a fundraiser to help support World Vision and their cause to Fight World Hunger. In 2007 we participated in 30- Hour Famine and we raised over $5,000.00. More than 26,000 kids under age 5 die every day from hunger-related causes! We can help stop this cycle! It only takes $30.00 a month to feed and care for a child for a month. We are super excited to be doing this again. This year’s famine will be held at the home of Jenna and Lora Wiles and in their backyard (as we sleep in cardboard boxes). It is important for us to do this sort of humanitarian work so that we can be a compassionate people who care about the needs of others. The 2-day event will be filled with learning experiences, community work, games and even a little sleep! The fast will start on Thursday morning at 6:00am (so eat an early breakfast) and we will break the fast together on Friday at noon. If you are interested and want more details, there will be an informational meeting where you can order t-shirts, get your fundraising packet and get all kinds of details following the NYU event this Sunday night in the FLC from 7:30-8:00pm! If you want to make a difference in someone’s life, this is the perfect way to do it.
