Mark's Remarks 2/1/09

Scott and I had the rare privilege of baptizing three young men last week. As I looked at them, I thought that if we asked those young men, those three could literally change the world. I feel similar thoughts with an infant baptism. We have no idea of the abilities and the future that God has placed within this little package.
The first question we ask of the parents of the babies to be baptized is this, “Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, and reject the evil powers of this world?” I wouldn’t blame a young mother at that point if she kicked over the communion font and flounced out of the room.
Some of those moms have already changed that child’s entire wardrobe seven times that morning. She’s kept the baby reasonably happy throughout a long worship service. Now the child up in front indicating to his mother, by his bobbing head, that he is ready to be fed, he is unhappy and he isn’t going to wait much longer! Somehow, asking that mother if she would also “renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness and reject the evil powers of this world,” is expecting a bit too much at the moment!
We’re in the business of helping these young moms and dads. I wonder if, as we have the privilege of watching these young folk corral their children, they’re not really ministering to us.

When God’s People PrayLooking Ahead to Lent: FAQ’s

What is Lent? Lent is a time of repentance and preparation set aside on the church calendar to prepare our hearts for Easter. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is often associated with giving up or sacrificing something from our daily lives.

What are the ways I can help make theLenten study a success? Participate! Signup early, open your home to host a group, or offer to facilitate a group (this is the easiest study to lead that we’ve ever done, and advance training will be provided.)

Are there special worship opportunities during Lent? Plan to attend special services on Ash Wednesday (2/25), Maundy Thursday (4/9) and Good Friday (4/10). They are each uniquely planned to enhance your understanding and participation in the season of Lent.

How does Liberty United Methodist celebrate Lent? At LUMC, you’re invited to add something to your spiritual life each Lent by participating in a churchwide small group study.

What is the study for Lent this year? We’ll be meeting in small groups at church and in people’s homes for a six-week study of Jim Cymbala’s, When God’s People Pray. Groups will begin meeting the first week of March. Talk with your friends about forming a small group (10-12 people is ideal).

Can You Help Me Find a Small Group to Join? Absolutely! You’ll have opportunities all throughout February to join groups forming in people’s homes. There are also two large group meeting times scheduled at the church for Monday and Wednesday evenings. Childcare will be provided for groups meeting at the church.

World Visions 30-Hour Famine
On February 26th and 27th Our 8th-12th grade Youth Are Going To…
Starve for Food
Chris was lucky. He got to eat breakfast this morning. A brown and white mushy breakfast will be the only meal he’ll eat today. And in Zambia, where almost half the population – more than 5 million people – is hungry, Chris is blessed to have that mush.
But some kids won’t get anything to eat—all day. And you won’t see them on the TV or hear their stories on the radio. In fact, before this day is over, 26,000 children under age 5 will die because of hunger, disease and poverty.
14,000 of them will die from causes linked to malnutrition alone. Today… tomorrow… and the next day… That’s one every seven seconds.
But here’s the good news. Students in our congregation are choosing to make a difference. They are getting ready to take part in World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine. They’re going to raise money by not eating for 30 hours so that kids like Chris can eat every day.
In the coming weeks you’ll hear more about the 30-Hour Famine. So here’s where you come in: please pray for the famine participants, and then prayerfully consider how you can offer your financial support to help save kids’ lives.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Motivated by faith in Jesus Christ, World Vision serves alongside the poor and oppressed as a demonstration of God’s unconditional love for all people.

Building Committee Update 2/1/09

Building Committee Update

The Building Committee continues to meet, absorb great amounts of information and act to responsibly continue the job set before us. Much was accomplished in 2008; much is left to do. As we move forward, we try to stay focused on our most important, common purpose: to reach others with the good news of Jesus Christ. HOW we best do that is often where the consensus ends…or, put another way, ‘the devil is in the details’!! Students of John Wesley might recall the ‘high church/low church’ tension that was constant throughout his ministry. We can’t help but note the parallels between that and our present-day challenge of meeting both contemporary and traditional congregational needs in a new building. (Prayers needed here!) In explaining this in our most recent Building Committee meeting, Brian Sommers wisely concluded that this challenge is perfectly consistent with the history of the Methodist Church; something to be accepted and celebrated instead of resolved. It’s just who we are, and it seems to work just fine. Thanks, Brian, we need to hear that!

Other milestones worth mentioning from our January meeting:

Pete Hall, vice president of operations for Curry Real Estate reported that he has shown our property to three prospective buyers and continues to aggressively market it through historically successful channels. However, in this market it’s going to take just the right buyer to give us the price we need in the time frame we need. We can but hope! (Prayers needed here.)
Ron Cowger provided a thorough update on infrastructure plans (grading, roads, sewers, detention and retention ponds, water, gas and electric, communication with the city of Liberty, MODoT, etc.) Ron has done a stellar job of using his talents to carefully determine the most cost-effective ways to successfully prepare our site for both Phase I and future phases. It’s a fact that a lot of money will have to be spent before we can even begin a new building. We continue to search for an entity that might want to occupy part of the property we own to help defray this cost, but so far none of the avenues pursued have led to a successful conclusion. (Prayers needed here!)
Ryan Coffey and Mark Stockton reported on their exhaustive research in comparing the final three construction companies vying for our project. Their expertise and doggedness in sorting through apples and oranges to get a true comparison of the three bids resulted in a recommendation that the Building Committee could confidently forward to our Board of Trustees for consideration. If selected, we would be partnering with a firm that has built 70 churches locally, has been in business 55 years and is willing to waive pre-construction fees – a huge coup. Furthermore, Ryan was able to negotiate cost savings below their initial offer. (Prayers of thanks here for Ryan and Mark!)
Spencer Fields gave a review of the visioning sub-group meeting with conference representative Bob Farr, in which he brought us down to earth a bit regarding how much our church can actually afford to build, especially if our current property does not sell quickly. Spencer is forming a financial sub-group to ascertain new real numbers for our architect and committee to work with going forward, and recommendations of how we might raise the money needed. (Prayers needed here.) Please contact Spencer Fields if you have particular expertise in the financial or banking sector and desire to serve on this committee; several of our members have already agreed to do so. The good news is, we’re moving closer and closer to our goal, even if it is with baby steps.
Saving the best news for last, it was reported to the committee’s applause that LUMC as of 2008 year-end is DEBT FREE! Yes, dear friends, Imagine Capital Campaign funds were used to pay down the last of our debt, and our current property and new property are now ours, free and clear. (ALLELUJAHS HERE!) We must enjoy this brief period while we can, because the remaining funds from building campaign pledges are simply not sufficient for Phase I of our new building. However, we are fortunate to have real assets to help us move forward to grow our flock, “feed our sheep” and expand the kingdom of God to include the as- yet-unknown members of our church family.
Those on the Building Committee can tell you we have had tremendous ups and downs in this journey, but our faith is strong that, with your help, we can accomplish this work. It is achievable, but it will take all of us working together in Christian love to make it happen. PRAYERS NEEDED HERE!
It should also be noted that every member of our hard-working church staff has met countless hours to plan, think and think again. Thank them for their hard work; it is invaluable.

Mark's Remarks 1/25/09

We have a tradition here that anyone and everyone gather for a spiritual growth time during the weeks of Lent. During the 6 weeks of Lent, we divide into small groups for weekly study and discussion. This year for our Lenten Study, our adult ministries director, Lora Wiles, is organizing us into small groups for a study of Jim Cymbala’s When God’s People Pray, a video presentation with workbooks. Groups will meet on Sunday morning, in homes throughout the week and in large group viewing sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings in the Family Life Center. This begins the first week of March.

See the Adult Ministries page of this OverView for more information. I hope you’ll plan on registering for this exciting opportunity for spiritual growth.

Children's Ministries 1/25/09

The Children’s Sunday School lesson for today comes from Luke 4:14-30. Jesus was once a child, just like our kids, and Jesus did many special jobs when he grew up. He came to earth to fulfill the words of Isaiah’s prophecy – to do his ministry here on earth! Our children have special jobs, jobs in ministry. Ask your child, “What tools does Jesus give us to do his work?” and “What is the ministry God is calling you to do?” ie: collecting food and clothes, sending a card to a sick friend, singing in worship, reading the scripture in Bible Study or worship, etc.

Last Sunday, Ms. Katie Cramer–Eck from Hillcrest Ministries came to speak at the children’s Sunday School assembly. Since before Christmas, along with teaching the children about Stewardship we have been saving the children’s offering money to purchase a new dryer for Hillcrest Ministries. We accomplished our goal! Katie Cramer-Eck is so very thankful for the dryer and was delighted to talk to the children.
At the assembly we asked the children:
· Could just one of you have purchased this dryer by yourself? No, it costs a lot of money. But by putting all our offerings together, we accomplished a great thing for someone else!
On the same note: Could just one family bring enough offering to build our new church? No, that costs a LOT of money! But if we each do our part, giving the portion God asks us to give, and by working together we can accomplish great and awesome things for His children!

Veggie-Tales Party

Hey kids (and parents who can come - we’ll need help with supervision), on Monday, February 16, LPS has no school, so we invite you to a Veggie-Tales Party with Abe and the Amazing Promise! Meet Ms. Sondra in Wesley Hall at 10:00 am. We’ll be finished by noon. We’ll play some games, hear the Bible Story, eat some awesome snacks and watch the movie.
We’ll witness Bob the Tomato trying to bring the story of Abraham and Sarah to life, and learn of their wait for a promised son. We’ll see how their patience is tested when spitting camels and a film crew of zany French peas get involved. But whether we’re waiting on a promise from God or cookies from teachers or parents, we’ll learn that while being patient is never easy, the reward is always worth the wait!

REMINDER:
Kids’ Bulletins and Kids’ Worship Bags are available for your children during worship. After worship, please put the bags in the “Used Worship Bags” tubs so we can refresh and refill them before next Sunday.

Mark's Remarks 1/18/09

This piece, by Richard Culp, was on-line. See the credits below.

Two weeks after the farm credit company took our farm, I lost my job as ranch foreman. Our family moved into a compact rental unit, and [my wife] Geneva and I began working a series of minor jobs, including a stint at a fast-food restaurant. It was difficult to pay down the $100,000 debt that was left after the farm credit company seized all of our assets - our land, our equipment, our home, and our bank notes. There were many times that we didn't have money for groceries and living expenses, but God provided for us through our family, our friends and our church.

A year and a half later, God gave us our new direction. Geneva and I were offered a management position at an exclusive 2,600-acre waterfowl hunting club between Gridley and Colusa in northern California. Our clients were powerful and wealthy. As we served at the club in numerous ways, our situation witnessed to the fact that money and possessions cannot bring happiness. We had lost everything, yet we had joy in our lives.

After we had been at the club for about a year, I received a call from the head of the credit company that had taken our farm. He needed to talk with me. Geneva and I offered to drive to town, but he insisted on making the hour's drive out to the hunting club. As we sat together at a table, he leaned across and said, "I want to ask you something personal. A friend of mine recently lost everything he owned. His wife just committed suicide. We at the office have noticed that you two are handling this crisis differently than most people do. Can you tell me what your secret is?"

I was happy to witness to my faith. "We believe in the God of the Bible. He is sovereign over our lives, and he is in control. Even though the pain is very real, we are confident of this fact: God has proven sufficient and able to take care of us."Geneva added, "God's Word promises, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you' (Hebrews 13:5, NIV). We have never felt alone for a single moment."

Later, as the head of the credit company rose to leave, he thanked us. "You've given me a lot to think about," he said quietly.

In this time of economic difficulty, this note from William Jewell college is creative and relevant!

Have you heard about the North Star Job Club? Channel 9 News ran several announcements for it so perhaps that is where you heard about it. The meetings are held the first and third Mondays of every month from 6:30 -8:30 pm in Gano Chapel Assembly room on the college campus. Signs are posted on campus to direct the public to the building, but it’s right under the clock tower on the main campus. All who are interested in assistance with a job search are welcome.
Our meetings are casual, and no cost - even the parking is FREE. North Star Job Club is sponsored by our SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team, and the goal is to expand personal networks to help those in career transition with successful outcomes.

Children's Ministries 1/18/09

The children’s Sunday School lesson for today comes from Mark 1:4-11. They will learn that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The sacrament of Baptism, both Jesus’ and our own is a symbol that reminds us that we belong to God’s family and that God loves us very much! Ask your child what bird symbolizes baptism.

Throughout January, the children’s Stewardship lessons focus on “our prayers.” Before the children pray in class, they light a candle. This helps them focus and invites the Holy Spirit to be with them in their prayer-time.

During the past weeks we have been counting the children’s offering money, and have been saving it to help Hillcrest Ministries purchase a new dryer. Today during Sunday School, the children are invited to an assembly with Miss Katie Cramer-Eck from Hillcrest. We will have a “dryer blessing” and celebrate the fact that when we all work together and put our money together, great things can be accomplished!

Congratulations to the 5th-and 6th-graders who completed the Created by God human sexuality classes. Thanks to the three churches who participated: Gashland, North Star and Liberty UMC. Thanks to the parents who supported us and brought food, and thanks to those who served as small group leaders.

Mark's Remarks 1/11/09

We have several in our faith community who are quite ill this week. Thinking about these great folk, one has to wonder what God had in mind.

Phil Yancey is a remarkable writer, several of our groups have studied his books. In one of his best, The Jesus I Never Knew, he writes of Jesus’ reaction to illness and suffering. He wrote of how Jesus wished to be remembered by us and all of mankind…Presumably [Jesus] could have had any resurrected body he wanted, and yet he chose one identifiable mainly by scars that could be seen and touched. Why? When human beings fantasize, we dream of pearly straight teeth and wrinkle-free skin and sexy ideal shapes. We dream of an unnatural state: the perfect body. But for Jesus, being confined in a skeleton and human skin WAS the unnatural state. The scars are, to him, an emblem of life on our planet, a permanent reminder of those days of confinement and suffering.

There’s an old saying, “To live is to suffer.” That’s kind of a downer, but life is easier if we don’t have false expectations. The good part is, for those who are following Christ, we have the capacity to cope.

C.S. Lewis put it this way, “God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain but without stain.”

Children's Ministries 1/11/09

Today the children’s Sunday School lesson comes from Luke 2:41-52. Mary and Joseph took Jesus, when he was 12 years old, to Jerusalem for a special day called the Feast of the Passover. This was an exciting time for Jesus! After the feast, he remained behind at the temple and listened to the teachers and asked them questions. Ask your child how Mary and Joseph felt when they couldn’t find Jesus! At home, enjoy this song together - Sing one line and have the children echo you. Use the tune of “Where is Thumbkin?”Where is Jesus, where is Jesus? There he is, there he is!He is in the Temple, he is in the Temple.Twelve years old, twelve years old.

Stewardship lessons during children’s Sunday School focus on all aspects of Stewardship: Tithing of our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service. Being good stewards is doing what God wants us to do.

Throughout the month of January we are focusing on our prayers. This Sunday the children are decorating a prayer journal – to be used each Sunday to record their prayer requests, joys, and concerns. Parents, you could try doing this at home, too. Keeping a family prayer journal would help reinforce what we are teaching in Sunday School.

HIS Kids” are collecting items for “Art for the Heart” for Spofford Home this month. Items needed include: Elmer’s glue, sketchbooks, canvas boards, spin art, scented markers, drawing paper, and construction paper. Bring these things on Wednesday to HIS Kids or to Sondra Buell’s office. Thanks for your help!

Thank you to the wonderful carolers that came and sang. What a neat treat for us. We want to thank each of you and the sponsors for coming on such a cold night and singing carols to us. I had told Sam to ask you inside so I could give you cookies, but he said you were cold and had to keep moving. Sam and Joy Chapman

HIS Kids” have been invited to sing at the LOVE Inc. Concert of Concerts on February 8th at 3:00 pm.

Mark your calendars! Vacation Bible School will be July 13-17, 2009. We are currently looking for two new directors; we’re expanding our director team . If you are interested in this three-year commitment, please contact Sondra Buell at one of the numbers listed above.

Food Kitchen 1/11/09

Food Kitchen 2008 Report

2008 has drawn to a close with its joyS and sorrows, ups and downs, ordinary days and exciting days. Through it all we have the assurance that God is with us. Because we are so blessed in so many ways, we are to do as Jesus said in Matthew 25: 34-40, we are to feed those less fortunate. We are to feed God’s lambs.

This church has been serving the first Saturday of each month at the Food Kitchen in Kansas City, KS since November 5, 1983. Bill and I took over as coordinators in February 1995. We feel we should give a year-end report so you may see where your money is spent.

We received $6,616.25. Our expenses were $4,834.72. This included $3,521.80 to the food kitchen for overhead (manager salary, paper products, utilities, trash, cost per person and cost of drinks.)

The most important is the numbers OF people served. In the eleven months we served 2,630 adults and 491 children—a total of 3,121 ( Leawood Baptist Church took our turn in June.) We always serve second helpings. For some, this is their only meal of the day. However, in November and December the line did not stop on first helpings.

If you would like to join us, we have a sign-up sheet in the Narthex and FLC foyer the Sunday before we serve or call the church office. You also can show up on Saturday morning at 9:15 at the kitchen of the church.

This ministry would not be possible without the help of so many that volunteer their time, talents and financial resources. May you have a star in your crown.

Thank you,
Hazel and Bill Davidson
