Mark's Remarks 10/19

Have you ever read some of children’s letters to God? A few new ones…
Dear God, I bet it’s very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only four people in our family and I can never do it. —Nancy Dear God, maybe Cain and Abel would not kill each other so much if they each had their own rooms. It works out okay with me and my brother. —Larry Dear God, thank you for the baby brother but what I asked for was a puppy. I never asked for anything before. You can look it up. —Joyce Dear God, is it true my father won’t get in heaven if he uses his golf words in the house? —Anita Dear God, is Rev. Coe a friend of yours, or do you just know him through the business? —Donny Dear God, I am doing the best I can. Really. —Frank

Paul wrote a letter to God. He said, “I thank God on every remembrance of you.” Of whom was Paul speaking? He was speaking of his church family. I feel the same way. Your letters and e-mails, meals and calls were a titanic tonic for me during my recent “time out.” I really mean that! I read your notes and cards and felt a tremendous debt of gratitude which I doubt I can ever repay. Thank you so much!

Children's Ministries 10/19

The children’s Sunday School lesson for this Sunday comes from 2 Kings 22:1-33; 23:1-3. It’s about a very young king, Josiah! Josiah was a good kid. Even though he was very young, he tried to do what God wanted him to do. He even collected money so they could fix the Temple where they worshipped God. Josiah wanted it to be a nice place to worship God. Ask your child what he/she can do that is great!

Today’s Stewardship Lesson for
Children’s Sunday School: We will read 2 Kings 12:10-11 and talk about where our money goes after we put it in the offering plate.

Trunk-or-Treat at LUMC

The Family Events Committee is sponsoring a Trunk-or-Treat event on the evening of October 31st. We need people to decorate their trunk and provide treats for the children.
No preregistrations are needed; just show up with your decorated trunk!

Besides the trunks & treats, there will be music, hotdogs, cider, and lots of fun.

Worship with your Child

On Wednesday evening, November 5th, at 7:15 p.m., Sondra Buell will be holding a class for parents who want to worship with their child/ren. Parents will receive tips on how to prepare their children for worship, gather ideas that work to make worship meaningful for their child/ren, and discuss the benefits of worshipping together. Please preregister by e-mailing Sondra at the address above or call and leave her a message. If you need childcare, please call and leave a message at ext. 112.

A Bright Idea for Parents
Written by Sondra Buell

The season of Advent begins the Sunday after Thanksgiving and lasts for four weeks. It’s the Christian season of PREPARATION for the birth of Jesus Christ.

As a child, I have fond memories of my family lighting candles on our Advent Wreath. Our church lit Advent candles during worship, but we also had a wreath at home, lit the candles daily, and read a short devotion. The anticipation of lighting the candles, combined with the countdown to Christmas, prepared our hearts and our minds for the real reason for the season - the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Through this activity, I grew to love Jesus.
If this is something that interests you, I will be leading a mini workshop on Wednesday, November 19th. It will begin after HIS Kids at 7:15 pm and will last approximately 45 minutes. Bring your kids along to this workshop. I’ll teach you how to make a simple Advent Wreath, hand out short devotions to read with your children, and share some background information about Advent.

The Nursery Committee will be hosting a Nursery Worker Appreciation Dinner on Thursday evening, November 20 at 7:00 pm. We APPRECIATE all those who care for our littlest Methodists!

Dates to put on your on Calendar:

Advent Journey – A Whole-Church Event- December 7, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm

LUMY 10/19

Sunday Night LUMY- LUMY is the place to be every Sunday night for students in 6th-12th grade. It could quite possibly be the best evening of your week. You will not be disappointed. Tonight, bring a friend. LUMY 101 (6th-7th-graders) meets from 5:30-6:45 in the FLC/Wesley Hall. LUMY (8th-12th -graders) meets from 6:30-8:15 in the FLC/Wesley Hall. Also, please do not show up or drop off before your group’s time. See you tonight.
Sign in/out LUMY 101-Kursta Hill
Snacks- Kursta Hill, Nancy McCleery, Sharon Parker

If you want to know more about His Voice for Sudan, please check out their website at www.hisvoiceforsudan.com.

Fundraising- We still have fundraising cards available for you to help offset the cost of events. You can stop by the youth office (rm 206) and pick up a stack of Superior Cards. Each one has LUMY written on the front, and the back has coupon offers that are good until October 2009. These cards also can be used once a day everyday until they expire in a year. These cards will pretty much sell themselves! The cards will be sold for $10.00 and you will get $6.00 on each card into your own LUMY account. You do not need to pay anything when you pick the cards up, but you are responsible for that money. If you want some set aside, just reply to Sarah (sarah.beard@lumcmo.org) with how many you would like. You just need to turn in the money to the youth office and we will keep track of the rest.

Mystery Trip- The mystery trip is right around the corner. This is a trip that is a total mystery for 10th-12th-graders. We’ll be leaving Thursday, October 30th, and we’ll be back on the evening of Saturday, November 1st. Please let us know ASAP if you want to attend. More details to come…but not a lot of details…then it wouldn’t be a mystery.

Snacks for LUMY- We now have the new popcorn machine to help feed our ever-growing youth program. This item did cost quite a bit of money, so if you feel like you are able to give, please make checks out to LUMC and put “LUMY snacks” in the memo. We appreciate any offering you are able to give to help offset this cost.

Bible Study- Wednesday night Bible Studies are in full swing. 10th-12th grade meet from 5-6pm in Study Center 4 (across from the LUMY room). 6th and 7th meet from 6:15-7pm in the LUMY Room. And 8th and 9th grade meet from 7:15-8:15pm in Study Center 4.

Prayer Group- LUMY has started a prayer group just for students. We currently are meeting on Thursday nights. If you have prayer requests, we would love to lift them up in prayer. Or if you feel as though you would like to be a part of this group we would love to have you join us to learn about prayer and to pray for students and their needs. Please contact us to give us prayer requests, or to let us know you are coming so we can get you time and location of our meeting.

College Connect- Thank you so much to the people that have already given so generously to the College Connect program. If you haven’t given yet, or you are not sure what College Connect is, please read on. In our church, we want to be able to support our students as they move on from high school to college. One of the ways we reach them is by sending them “care packages” around finals time to know that people back home are thinking of them. To be sensitive to what students want and/or need, we are excited to announce that we will now send them gift cards to use at their own discretion during those busy times of the school year. So, we need your help with two things. 1, we need to start collecting $5 gift cards from chain stores (Starbucks, Target, Taco Bell, Subway, Sonic, etc). Please drop these gift cards in one of the LUMY Black Boxes located outside the youth office (rm 206) or outside the FLC/Wesley Hall. 2, we need to know who is in college and what their address is if they are between the ages of 17-24 and are taking any college classes. Please email this information to Andrew.beard@lumcmo.org.

LUMY Coffee- We are still selling coffee, but we are currently just selling it out of our office. If you are interested in coffee or hot chocolate, please stop by the LUMY office (rm 206) and pick some up for $10. We will start selling again during the services starting in November

Please let Andrew or Sarah know if you have any questions, comments, or prayer requests.

Love INC 10-19

Love INC of Clay County has been in Liberty, Missouri, working with low -ncome families, individuals, elderly and disabled since 1990. Our mission in the community is to mobilize the Body of Christ to work together to meet the needs of the poor. We do that with all Christ-centered churches working together in your community. Christian volunteers play a vital role in us being able to meet the needs of those in need in our community.

Love INC is in urgent need of volunteers to carry out our mission. Our call volume in 2004 was from 100 to 200 calls a month. We now are at a call volume that ranges from 500 to 600 calls per month. We have grown as a ministry in not only call volume but in the needs met in our community. Needs coming to Love INC in 2005 were in the $180,000 range. Needs through August of 2008 are already at $239,000. We administer the Liberty Ministerial Alliance fund which assists with emergency assistance needs; however, funds are down 41% from 2007. We continue to grow our Love INC GAP ministries (used furniture, food vouchers, clothing, housewares, hygiene kits, baby supplies and furniture/equipment, and much more). This has increased 6% from 2007. For church partners outside of Liberty, the Love INC board started a designated fund which church partners could donate to if their church body was not in Liberty.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, we desperately need your help. We do not have volunteers on the phones returning phone calls. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Love INC at 781-7121, press 4 for directory and 1 for Julie Dorset’s extension to sign up for the next Volunteer Orientation.

Volunteers are needed in the thrift store and in our Clearinghouse working with clients.

Scott's thoughts 10/12

It amazes me how busy we are as a church. There are constantly meetings, small groups, youth groups, Scouts, rehearsals, dinners and weddings. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings every possible room is full, and both worship centers are busy non-stop. Thinking about the entire ministry that is done here is exciting and sometimes daunting. This past Sunday, as I filled the pulpit for Mark, it became abundantly clear how much we rely on the laity to do the work of the church. This is the way a church should run! Today, I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who donate so many hours working for the Kingdom here at Liberty United Methodist Church. I especially want to thank our volunteer liturgists, Rev. Arlin Renfrow, Tricia Kiely, Rev. Brian Sommers and Cara Pilch, who led worship this past Sunday, our Altar Guild which prepared communion, our ushers, greeters, teachers, drivers, hospitality, cooks, helpers, worship committees, Chancel Choir and Praise t Team. (Please forgive me if I forgot to mention your volunteer group.)
Keep up the great and godly work; you make a difference!
Scott

Children's Ministries 10/12

Sunday School lesson for this Sunday comes from 1 Kings 2:1-4; 4:29-34. The children will learn about another king in the Bible, King Solomon. God told Solomon he could have anything he wished, and he asked God for wisdom so he could be a good leader for the people. King Solomon did become a very wise king and tried hard to please God.

Stewardship lesson in Children’s Sunday School: Today we will talk about offering plates. We’ll read 2 Kings 12:9 to learn more about offering plates. Ask you child about the very special “dryer” container we are using right now for our collection box!

Today we welcome the “HIS Kids” to worship! They are singing at 8:30 and 9:00 services. Along with their music, we have 7 speakers: Payton Christensen, Tyler Cornell, Grace Ordonio, Lauren Rankin, Taylor Sparks, Kassidy Tocco, and Jackson Witt.

Liberty United Methodist Church has a long heritage of teaching children about missions. “‘Love your neighbor as yourself” comes alive as we help children learn how to lovingly reach out to those around us, to those less fortunate than us, and to those in other countries.
For the past several weeks, the “HIS Kids” children have been collecting food items and products for In As Much. This coming Wednesday, the kids in Club 45 “HIS Kids” will be taking a field trip to In As Much to deliver all these items. Thanks to the parents who have helped their children with this great project!

Advent Journey

Advent Journey, being held Sunday evening, December 7th from 5:00 to7:00, is a whole-church event with food, fellowship, music, crafts, games, and a bookstore.

Each year we gather together a team to plan for this awesome event. If you would like to serve on this planning team, please sign up today. Help us pick a theme, decide on the craft projects, line up the entertainment, and arrange for the book sale. The youth group will be planning the supper and games for the small children.
Our first meeting will be October 15th at 7:15 pm. E-mail Sondra Buell for details.

LUMY 10/12

Sunday Night LUMY His Voice for Sudan- LUMY is the place to be every Sunday night, and tonight, Sunday, October 12th, LUMY is having a very special event. We have an opportunity that has spoken to our hearts, and I hope it will speak to yours. Here in the Student ministry of this church, we fully support international mission work. We currently support an orphanage in Guatemala by going and serving with the people every other year and we will be continuing this service indefinitely. The new opportunity that we have is partnering with a group called His Voice for Sudan. This ministry is dear to our hearts as Sarah has served in Sudan as a part of this ministry. There are currently two fully functioning orphanages, one in Morobo and one in Lura. They are looking to build another. We have decided to partner with them to make a difference in a lost world looking for hope. We hope that you will partner with us. Join us tonight, Sunday, October 12th, at 6:30pm in the FLC/Wesley Hall for an ALL LUMY, all church, and all family and friends event to hear His Voice for Sudan. Tonight you will have the opportunity to support His Voice (including, but not limited to): screen printed shirts made on site, purchasing photographs of the children and orphans in Sudan, and just plain giving.

HIS Voice for Sudan 10/5

On October 12th, all of LUMY will be meeting on behalf of His Voice for Sudan. The founders of His Voice will be here to speak to the youth and anyone else who would like to hear what is going on in Southern Sudan. Amber and Vernon Burger along with their 2 wonderful children, Titus and Justus, will be here to tell how we can partner with them to help change the lives of the children of Sudan. This is where they are now, and you will have to come to the FLC, Wesley Hall on October 12th at 6:30pm to find out more.

The first orphanage was built in a village called Morobo, Sudan. It began with 48 orphans, 12 widows (to care for the children), 1 pastor, 1 guard, and 1 farmer. It has grown to 72 orphans, 14 widows, 3 cooks, 1 pastor, 1 guard, and 1 farmer. This is the first time in the lives of these children that they are able to eat 3 meals a day on a consistent basis. On the orphanage grounds there is a school. Education is a large part of the orphanage. The school is for the orphans and also the local children. This has been such a great outreach. There are currently over 200 children in the school. Along with the school, there is a church. The children attend the church and are overseen throughout the week by a pastor. This has also been a great outreach to the community. During the week the church is a place where people can come from Congo, Uganda and from all over Sudan to be trained in the Bible. The land for the second orphanage was purchased in December 2006. All the children and widows have moved into the temporary facilities while they finish up the actual buildings. The land for the third orphanage was given to EPC by the Southern Sudanese government with no charge. Find out more on Oct 12th or www.hisvoiceforsudan.com

Mark's Remarks 10/5

A couple of years ago, the national media carried the story of a winner in the American Family Publishers' Sweepstakes. A notice arrived at the Bushnell Assembly of God Church in Sumter County, Florida, announcing that God was a finalist for the $11 million top prize! In the letter, the publishers wrote: "God, we've been looking for you." It went on to suggest how surprised God's neighbors would be to hear that God had won! Many people were surprised to discover that God's mailing address was in Sumter County, Florida! Others wondered about those neighbors who might be impressed with God's good luck. Finally, some of us might be thinking that since God is now so rich, God no longer needs our financial contributions, not to speak of our time and talents, that we have to offer. Not so! The "mite" we have to offer, if it comes from our hearts, is still "mighty," for it speaks to the heart of God.

Donate a $5 gift cards from any chain store- (Subway, McDonalds, Target, etc) which we’ll include in care packages along with notes of encouragement. This is an ongoing effort, so gift cards will always be welcomed and appreciated. They can be left at the church office or in a black LUMY box located outside the youth office, room 206, or outside the entrance to the Family Life Center. We also need college addresses for those from our congregation ages 17-24 who are taking any college classes. If you’d like to help with this ministry in other ways, contact Lora Wiles.

LUMY 10/5

The place to be on Sunday nights is LUMY. It is the night to have your face rocked. You don’t want to miss it every Sunday night. In fact, Sunday bring a friend, they deserve some fun too. LUMY 101 (6th-and 7th-Graders) meets from 5:30-6:45 and LUMY (8th-12th-graders) meets from 6:30-8:15 both in the FLC/Wesley Hall. Also, please do not show up or drop off before your age group’s time (i.e. 5:30 or 6:30).

As the student ministry has continued to grow, we are having more people at youth which means we need more snacks to feed the students if we want to continue that portion of our meetings. We are purchasing a popcorn machine and also a nacho machine to help save families money. These items do cost quite a bit of money, so if you feel like you are able to give, please make checks out to LUMC and put “LUMY snacks” in the memo. We appreciate any offering you are able to give to help offset this cost.

Bible Study- Wednesday night Bible Studies are in full swing. 10th-12th grade meet from 5-6pm in Study Center 4 (across from the LUMY room). 6th-7th grade meet from 6:15-7pm in the LUMY room. And 8th and 9th grade meet from 7:15-8:15pm in Study Center 4.

Bonfire- On Thursday, October 16th, we are having a huge bonfire, pumpkin carving contest, food, hot cocoa, and great fun. We’ll meet at the church at 7pm and be back at about 10pm. More details to come

Mystery Trip- About every other year LUMY goes on a mystery trip for our 10th-12th-graders. This is a trip where no one (not even the parents know) where the students are going. This year the trip is Thursday, October 30th, through Saturday, November 1st. The cost is $70. This includes transportation, food, skydiving…whoops, I gave something away. Please sign up sooner rather than later. Let Andrew Beard know if you have any questions

College Connect- in our church, we want to be able to support our students as they move on from high school to college. One of the ways we reach them is by sending them “care packages.” So, we need your help with two things. 1, we need to start collecting $5 gift cards from chain stores (Starbucks, Target, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Subway, Sonic, etc). Please drop these gift cards in one of the LUMY Black Boxes. One is located outside the youth office (rm 206) and one is located outside the FLC/Wesley Hall. 2, we need to know who is in college and what their address is. To put some parameters on it, we need to know anyone who is between the ages of 17-24 and is taking any college classes. Please email this information to
Andrew.beard@lumcmo.org.

LUMY Coffee- this past year members of LUMY sold coffee to help raise money for summer mission work. We are still selling coffee, but we are currently just selling it out of our office. If you are interested in coffee or hot chocolate, please stop by the LUMY office (room 206) and pick some up for $10. We will start selling again during the services starting in November.
