Mark's Remarks 9/28

There’s a church in Silicon Valley called Jubilee Christian Center. When Pastor Dick Bernal and M.C. Hammer, the rapper, sit down with Smokey Robinson and other born-again celebrities, the proceedings may be streamed over the nondenominational church's Web site or taped for cable television broadcast. On Easter Sunday, 1,470 young people received free Samsung cell phones at Jubilee's doors (unit value: $90) for bringing friends to services. "That was the hook, if you will," Bernal says. "Bring a friend, get a cell phone."
For some of us, “Bring a friend, get a cell phone,” is a little bit crass. Our motivation is better. We care enough about our friends to relate them to God. That’s the reason. Living a Christian life just makes sense. Welcome to church.

* * * *

I’ll be in the hospital for a few days this week for a procedure. It’s called a daVinci Prostatectomy or something like that. I’ll be “out of pocket” for a couple of weeks. I beg your forbearance. Modern medicine is truly marvelous. All you fellows, a PSA is cheap and easy. Please don’t let it go.

Family Day at Wilderness Camp 9/28

Next Sunday, October 5th, at our B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L Methodist Church Camp in Lawson, MO the Family Events Committee is hosting a Family Day at Wilderness. It’s from noon to whenever you’re done playing! The setting is gorgeous! You might just come home feeling refreshed and satisfied from being in God’s marvelous outdoors with great church friends!
Hamburgers, hotdogs and bottled water will be provided. To complete the noon meal please bring chips, crackers or a side dish.
Along with good food and fellowship, activities include:
o family photos
o hiking
o hayrides
o a fishing derby complete with prizes
o campfire singing (around 2:30) and s-mores.

There’s a great play space for outdoor games so bring your favorite outdoor game equipment.

If you would like to save your family some gas money, ride the shuttle bus to the camp and enjoy the fellowship.

LUMY 9/28

Sunday Night LUMY- Tonight, is bring a friend to LUMY Night. It’ll be “muy bueno.” LUMY 101 (6th-7th-graders) meets from 5:30-6:45. LUMY (8th-12th -graders) meets from 6:30-8:15. Both groups meet in the FLC/Wesley Hall. Also, please do not show up or drop off before your group’s time.

Snacks for LUMY- As our youth program grows, we are having more people at youth which means we need more snacks to feed them. We are purchasing a popcorn machine and also a nacho machine to help save money. These items do cost quite a bit of money, so if you are able to give, please make checks out to LUMC and put “LUMY snacks” in the memo. We appreciate any offering you are able to give.

Bible Study- Wednesday night Bible Studies are in full swing. 10th-12th grade meet from 5-6pm in Study Center 4 (across from the LUMY room). 6th and 7th meet from 6:15-7pm in the LUMY Room. And 8th and 9th grade meet from 7:15-8:15pm in Study Center 4.

His Voice for Sudan- On October 12th LUMY is having a special event. LUMY fully supports international mission work. We support an orphanage in Guatemala by going and serving with the people, and we will continue this service indefinitely. The new opportunity that we have is partnering with a group called His Voice for Sudan. This ministry is dear to our hearts as Sarah has served in Sudan as a part of this ministry. There are currently two orphanages; one in Morobo and one in Lura. They are looking to build another. We have partnered with them to make a difference in a lost world looking for hope. We hope that you will partner with us. Join us on Sunday, October 12th at 6:30pm in the FLC/Wesley Hall for an ALL LUMY, all church, and all family and friends event to hear His Voice for Sudan. That night you will have an opportunity to support His Voice by purchasing screen-printed shirts made on site or photographs of the orphans in Sudan.

College Connect- In our church, we want to be able to support our students as they move on from high school to college. One of the ways we reach them is by sending them “care packages” around finals time to know that people back home are thinking of them. To be sensitive to what students want and/or need, we are excited to announce that we will now send them gift cards to use at their own discretion during those busy times of the school year. So, we need your help with two things. 1, we need to start collecting $5 gift cards from chain stores (Starbucks, Target, Taco Bell, Subway, Sonic, etc). Please drop these gift cards in one of the LUMY Black Boxes located outside the youth office (rm 206) or outside the FLC/Wesley Hall. 2, we need to know who is in college and what their address is if they are between the ages of 17-24 and are taking any college classes. Please email this information to Andrew.beard@lumcmo.org.

Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or prayer requests.

Children's Ministries 9/28

The Children’s Sunday School lesson for September 28 is from Genesis 11:1-9. The children will learn how people all over the world are different but special. The Bible story is about the Tower of Babel. Ask your child about the tower. Ask your child why God made all the people talk in different languages.

Our annual fun-filled Family Day at Wilderness Camp in Lawson, MO is coming up! Mark your calendar for October 5th. A great lunch, family photos, fishing, hiking, games, hayrides, s-mores, prizes and music will fill the afternoon. Sign up in the narthex/foyer after worship!
Hamburgers, hotdogs, and water will be provided. Please bring chips or a side dish.
VBS 5th-graders from 2007 . . . . remember swimming laps during VBS to raise money for the new pool? Well, it’s finished and it is beautiful. Join us at the picnic so you can see it!

Acolyte Brush-up

Nancy Hammond and Davonna Smitley, acolyte coordinators, will be hosting an acolyte “brush-up” for our 5th-, 6th-, and 7t -graders on Sunday morning, October 5th, at 9:45 am in the upstairs sanctuary. This will take place during Sunday School, but won’t take the whole hour, so you can do both. Also, if you are in 4th through 7th grade and have never received acolyte training, but would like to serve as an acolyte, please come to this “brush-up” meeting and we will give you the whole run-down.

Our Director of Children’s Ministries is writing weekly mini lessons for the children on stewardship. These short lessons will be taught while the children’s offering is being collected. Parents of elementary children, you might ask your child about the special guest speaker who visited today.

The classes for Created by God have been postponed due to scheduling conflicts of the guest presenter.

Members of the Sojurners Class will be at tables at the church’s entrances before the services on October 5 and October 12. Please leave your gift at the table on one of those days.

F.R.A.N.'s Open House

F.R.A.N.’s Open House
Next Sunday, September 28th

F.R.A.N.’s Open House will be a special day to invite your friends and neighbors to church. F.R.A.N. is an acronym for your Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances and Neighbors.

How can you become involved?

Pray for whom the Lord is leading you to invite. Maybe it is your neighbor who is not part of a church family. Maybe it is a friend at work or an acquaintance at the store where you shop. What about your family; are there family members that are searching for a church home that you could invite?

Take home a bundle of door hangers today and distribute them around your neighborhood.

Offer to bring your guest with you if they need a ride.

Tell them about your Sunday School class or other small group and ask them to attend with you!

Remember, more than 50% of our fellow Liberty area residents do not have a church home.

Finding people to invite is easy…just ask them and leave the rest up to the Lord.

Remember that the United Methodist Church is all about:

Open hearts, open minds, and open doors!

Marks' Remarks

Good things happen slowly. That's not universally true, of course, but it's true enough to wonder if there is a structural explanation. Construction usually requires sequential elements of assembly, whereas destruction can be done all at once. Again, it’s our national tragedy of hurricane Ike which took lovely neighborhoods between League City and Galveston, neighborhoods built on stilts, built of quality materials, and reduce them to piles of flotsam on a sandy spit. That is a tragic illustration of what I’m about to write.
Early researchers in artificial intelligence came across an explanation, a phenomenon they called hill climbing.(1) Imagine a mountain range of opportunities, where the higher you get, the greater the advantage. Hasty opportunists will never get past the foothills because they pay attention only to the slope of the ground under their feet, climb quickly to the immediate hilltop, and get stuck there. Going downhill holds no attraction for hasty opportunists, even though the beautiful peaks lie beyond. Patient opportunists take the longer view to the distant mountains and toil through many ups and downs on the long trek to the heights.
Our new building project is large. It takes time. This month, the building committee has approved the processing of contracts with engineers, realtors and architects. The peaks beckon.

Please write your check to LUMW with “Snack Pack” on the memo line. Thank you!

The Children’s Sunday School lesson is the fun and much-loved story of Noah’s Ark. You can find it in Genesis 6:8-9:17. The kids will learn very fun things about animals, the BIG boat, Noah and his family, the rainbows! Noah had to trust God and obey his command to build an ark. It’s hard to trust and obey. But God promises to help us, and his beautiful rainbow is the love-filled symbol of his promises.

Shuttle Ministry 9/21

Shuttle Ministry 2008

From October ’07 to May of ’08 LUMC developed, staffed and built a constant-run Shuttle Ministry to additional donated parking spaces at Cobblestone. We can save church dollars through 2008 if we change to an on-demand shuttle. How? Through low-impact and no-cost changes in parking habits by 100% of the congregation, we can delay starting the Cobblestone shuttle. Think of attending your favorite sporting event (where they charge up to $22 to park for 4 hours!). With dedicated volunteers helping to fill every spot, this will work, as we “Park West and Go East.”
· Enter the campus for prime parking spots beside the Study Center any time on Sunday.
· Fill the west and south parking lots first. Park there and enter any worship or class without stairs. As Methodists, we’ll make sure all doors are opened.
· Implement Hilltop Helpers (parking greeters and shepherds) as per Five Practices recommendations.
Optional, but important, develop family or neighborhood HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) personal shuttles with 3 + riders.

The Shuttle Ministry will stay active each Sunday with scheduled runs to the Retirement Centers. Then with time, assessment and securing volunteers, we’ll build to the new On-Demand system:

Phase I: October
A) Sign up Hilltop Helper teams for 1X/quarter. This job is great for those with a Servant’s heart or spiritual gift to meet & greet. No age requirement.

B) Evaluate parking patterns to improve traffic flow and secure coordinator(s) for our Hilltop Helpers.

Phase II: November
Train and initiate Hilltop Helper teams.
Evaluate and announce adjustments.

Phase III: December
Add Cobblestone parking only for special events and Christmas as East parking lot is full.

Do you know of someone who needs a ride to church this winter? Please provide their name, location (center/apartment/home) and contact information to the church office today.

Mark's Remarks 9/19

This is our church family reunion. We’re together for the first time in almost two years. Why is it that as one gets older, one appreciates reunions more? Do you remember how much we hated the reunions our family had as teenagers? Teenagers still do. Standing around and making small talk with strangers who share nothing in common with you except a last name. Having older persons pat you patronizingly and marvel at how much you've grown. Then they discuss whose nose you have, whose eyes you have, and even whose ears you have. Being pressured by Aunt Mary to try her special bean recipe. Most teenagers would rather do anything than attend a family reunion.

But as years go by, we appreciate reunions more. We feel a need to draw strength from the larger family, to receive help in our grieving for grandparents and parents, to remember the rock from which we are hewn.

As our founder John Wesley affirmed, "Christianity is essentially a social religion, and to turn it into a solitary religion is indeed to destroy it."

Just look around and consider what a diverse and wonderful family of God we are. Though our racial makeup is predominantly white, we are racially inclusive. Obviously, we need to increase our African-American and Hispanic constituency. Politically, we cover the spectrum from liberal to conservative. We have some folks so liberal that the mere mention of Rush Limbaugh causes them to break out in the hives. Others are as conservative as a l00-year-old man I heard about. On his birthday he was interviewed for a news story. The reporter said, "Sir, in your lifetime you've seen lots of changes, haven't you?" "Yep," said the old man, "and I've been agin' all of ’ em."

In our church are some of the wealthiest people in Liberty; but we have others who literally do not know how their meals will be financed next week. We have folks in our church whose accents betray the fact that they come from the South. Then there are others of us who are normal Missourians (perhaps an oxymoron), we don't have an accent. Within our fellowship are sports fans who yell for Tigers, Jayhawks, Cornhuskers, even a few Wildcats. My goodness, we are diverse! And isn't it wonderful?!

We live in a fractured, polarized society. Everybody out there is choosing up sides against everybody else. But just imagine if we, the church of Jesus Christ, can demonstrate for a skeptical secular world that diverse persons and groups can unite around the name of Jesus. What a witness that would be!

Unity in Christ. That's what today is about.

LUMY 9/14

Sunday Night LUMY- This last Sunday was the first LUMY of the school year and it was amazing. You do not want to miss it tonight, Sunday the 14th. Bring a friend, they deserve some fun, too. LUMY 101 (6th-and 7th-Graders) meets from 5:30-6:45 and LUMY (8th-12th-graders) meets from 6:30-8:15, both in the FLC/Wesley Hall. Also, please do not show up or drop off before your age group’s time (i.e. 5:30 or 6:30).
This Sunday: Sign in/out LUMY 101-Lanette Taylor
Sign in/out LUMY-Julie White
Snacks- Trish Richardt and Kristina Brewer

Snacks for LUMY- As our student ministry program has continued to grow, we are having more and more people at youth which means we need more and more snacks to feed the students if we want to continue that portion of our meetings. We have decided to purchase a popcorn machine and also a nacho machine (the nacho machine may be purchased at a later date) to help save you (the parents) money. This way for snacks, we would need parents to just serve up the food instead of having to buy it. I know that many parents end up spending over $50 each time they help with snacks. These items do cost quite a bit of money, so if you feel like you are able to give, please make checks out to LUMC and put LUMY snacks in the memo. We appreciate any offering you are able to give to help offset this cost.

Flight Training- We do an early morning study for our 11th-and 12th-graders on Monday and Tuesday morning before school. This is a time when we help prepare our students to head out into the college or career world. The studies currently meet in our office (room 206) on Monday at 6:50am and Tuesday at 6:30am. You do not need to come to both; the two times are for people with scheduling conflicts.

Bible Study- Student Bible Studies are now in full swing. These LUMY Bible studies all meet on Wednesday nights in the Study Center. 10th-12th grade meet from 5-6pm in Study Center 4 (across from the LUMY room). 6th-7th grade meet from 6:15-7pm in the LUMY room. And 8th and 9th grade meet from 7:15-8:15pm in Study Center 4. All Bible Studies start this Wednesday, September 10th.

Prayer Group- LUMY has started a prayer group just for students. We currently are meeting on Thursday nights. If you have prayer requests, we would love to lift them up in prayer. Or if you feel as though you would like to be part of this group, we would love to have you join us to learn about prayer and to pray for students and their needs. Please contact Andrew or Sarah Beard to either give prayer requests or to find out the prayer meeting time and location.

Please let Andrew or Sarah Beard know if you have any questions, comments, or prayer requests.

Children's Ministries 9/14

The Sunday School lesson for September 14th comes from Genesis 3. Sometimes we want to do something that is wrong. The kids will learn that the easiest choice is not always the right choice. We need to “listen” to God and do what is right.

Next Sunday we will celebrate our children’s Heroes. All children’s Sunday School teachers and HIS Kids teachers and shepherds will be honored at the worship services. When you see one of our heroes, please whisper a prayer, “God bless this hero as he/she works with our children!”

Our annual fun filled Family Day at Wilderness Camp in Lawson, Mo is coming up! Mark your calendar for October 5th. A great lunch, fishing, hiking, games, hayrides, s’mores, prizes and music fill the afternoon. Sign up in the narthex/foyer next week!

VBS 5th –graders from 2007…..remember swimming laps during Bible School to raise money for the new pool? The pool is now done, so please join us at Family Day at Wilderness Camp so you can see the new pool—it’s beautiful!

Looking ahead:
* Advent Journey—Sunday, December 7, 2008 from 5-7pm
* Children’s Christmas Program—Sunday, December 14th, at the Community Center.

Kindermusik 9/14

In case you haven’t heard . . . . the research about music and children’s development is truly jaw-dropping. In the last couple of years, the eyes of the research community have turned increasingly to music, and the marvels and mysteries they have discovered are nothing short of amazing (though perhaps not exactly surprising to people who’ve regularly witnessed its effect).

The bottom line: early, positive, age-appropriate experiences with music—including Kindermusik—can have a remarkable and research-proven impact on children’s learning, including language and literacy skills (e.g., vocabulary, comprehension, listening, expression); social and emotional development; mathematics and pattern-recognition skills; and even ability to plan, guide, and self-regulate behavior.

Music & Literacy
Early music experiences can have a significant impact on literacy and reading. According to experts, learning to read depends on acquiring a variety of skills, including phonological processing, oral language, and comprehension. So when it comes to these literacy-boosting skills . . . how does Kindermusik fit in?

At home please follow this link to read the latest research and come to your own conclusions how Kindermusik, Liberty United Methodist Church and you can help your child grow into all that God has planned for the child.

Prayers and Squares 9/14

Prayers & Squares
Liberty United Methodist Church Prayer Quilt Ministry

Prayers and Squares kicked off our year with a September 8th potluck dinner and informational meeting. We meet at 6:30pm in the Study Center on the 2nd and 3rd Mondays of each month.

For more information please feel free to call Mary Robinson 781-1469, Ester Reed 429-5224, Barb Roby 792-4001, or Betty Miller 718-5543.
We would like to thank the loving people who request our quilts. They see a need and meet it. They follow through for loved ones and—often—strangers. They are the ones who get our quilts into the hands of those who need them.

Most of all, we thank God for the recipients who open themselves up and let us into their lives. By letting us help in our small way, they increase our understanding of His marvelous ways.
Last but not least, we would like to thank the quilt makers, for the prayer teams, for the donors, and for the staff and clergy of our church.

Dinner for Eight 9/14

"Dinner for Eight"
It's that time again! This is a wonderful opportunity for LUMC members to become better acquainted with others who may a attend different Worship Service or Sunday School class.
The fall session runs from Oct. 08 through Jan 09, at which time you will be included in the spring session with a new group unless notified otherwise. ( Note: we do not carry over last year's sign-ups)
Groups meet once a month with the host setting the time and date and providing the meat or main dish plus beverage. Others provide the vegetable, salad & dessert. Hosting will be rotated as will different dishes. OR try our dine-out group with the host selecting the time & restaurant. Dine In or Dine Out--each group of eight selects time to suit their group’s needs.
If you need more information, please call Mary Lou Stepenson-781-0676 or Glenna West-781-9387.
