Mark's Remarks 8/31

Warning, this is an earthy story. If you can’t handle it, don’t read it.

The San Francisco Zoo has an elephant called Calle who has a chronic illness requiring medication. The zoo people couldn't get Calle to take her dose orally, so a California pharmacologist developed a suppository. The 10-inch-long, four-pound, cocoa-butter bullets are crafted by the good folks at Guittard Chocolates in Burlingame.
Administering the daily medication takes five zoo workers, including one person to distract Calle with treats and one person who wears a full-arm glove. Why did I write this?
Several people in this very room will dread going back to work on Tuesday. If that person is you, if you're prone to complain about your job, or your life, just think: at least FIVE people out there have jobs worse than yours!
Remember, “He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread.” (Proverbs 12:11)

Mark's Remarks 8/24

Dear Friends,

2008 is an interesting election year! Every candidate, every word, every phrase, every communication, every commercial, they are all scrutinized to the nth degree. In my mind, I push the delete button on about 85% of the hype and then try to sift through the remainder to find out what is important. Of course, what I think is important differs from the person across the street or in another state. Those people have every right…to be wrong.

Even my grandsons imitate one or the other of the presidential candidates. Three-year-old Luke has a great Obama impression, and three week old John has adopted McCain’s hairstyle! I’m so proud of those boys!

“Ever on the cutting edge”, your church offers to you the opportunity to look at politics from the Christian perspective. On Wednesday evenings, you can join Christian Politics, a discussion led by Elise Fisher. While this group is politically neutral, the media is providing much cannon fodder that can readily stimulate conversation. On Sunday morning, the Genesis class is working through a book by Adam Hamilton, “Seeing Gray in Black and White” which hits politics, ethics and morality. You are encouraged to walk into either of these groups and “shoot off your mouth,” along with everyone else, should you so choose!

Mark's Remarks 8/17

It has been said that the perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing and the lawn mower is broken. This has been a great summer around here and nothing is broken. In fact, things are terrific! It’s been great for all the hard work of the church that has resulted in significant gains for the kingdom of God.
June and July brought missions. Our mission teams traveled to New Orleans, to Guatemala, to South Dakota, to North Kansas City, to Liberty and quite a few other places, bringing glory to God by the ministry of good works and helpful activity. Faithworks is on East Kansas Street today, as I write, helping a community leader by building him a ramp. This is just one of numerous projects for the summer.
The youth have been in mission, and lives are being changed. Andrew, Sarah, Donna and sponsors worked with the children of an orphanage in Guatemala. I cannot say who was more benefited, the orphans or our youth. Our youth are a large and still growing group inspired to achieve their outstanding potential.
We greatly enjoyed “The Voyage of the Friendship” this past Saturday. The voyage featured a youth musical experience/extravaganza with a cast of fourteen. It was a two-week course performed by our music department, leading us into an experience of Christ. Bryan and Sharon, the Bryans, and more lead this musical.
Vacation Bible School burst our seams in many ways. All of us children and adults learned a great deal. Thanks to the Children’s Education department and Sondra.
Who have I left out? Hundreds. Nevertheless, I want you to know that, far from being a sleepy season in a small town, where the predominant noise is the lawn mower, this has been an exciting period for the people of God!

This Sunday’s Sunday School Lesson is called:
The Centurion’s Servant.
The children will study Luke 7:1-10. They’ll learn that the Centurion was an army leader who sought help for one of his men that he considered his friend. Ask your child what he did for his friend. What did Jesus do? What can you do for your friends?

Be a Hero for a Child
God has an adventure planned for you right here at Liberty United Methodist Church, where you play the role of a hero and do something big to benefit the children, for eternity! In Exodus 31:3 it says: “I have filled you with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge.” Isn’t it exciting to know that God prepares us! And what could be more important than teaching our children about Jesus! That will make you a hero!
Be a Hero for a Child and volunteer for Children’s Sunday School, Wednesday night HIS Kids, or the nursery.

Mark's Remarks 8/10

At the 11:00 service we’re celebrating all of the individuals who’ve been married for fifty years or longer. We have 38 couples who’ve achieved this milestone. Over half will be in attendance with their families today. When these couples were married, the liturgy still included the word “obey!”
At any wedding, who is in attendance? The families, the community of friends and God are all there. Therefore, the wedding is no mere social nicety. High and holy worship happens. The earth is changed. Two tribes have united and a new one is created. A marriage is certainly a big event!
Life is complicated, and sometimes painful. That is undoubtedly one reason God has given us marriage--to give us someone to help us share life's burdens. Marriage is the norm for most people.
In an old Peanuts cartoon, Charlie Brown says to Schroeder, "My Grandpa and Gramma have been married for 50 years!" The friend replies, "They're lucky, aren't they?"Charlie Brown answers. "Gramma says it isn't luck--it's skill!" We honor the golden couples this morning because great marriages don't just happen. They do require skill and work, they require communication, they require a shared commitment to God. Congratulations to all these folk who’ve done so well and are tremendous examples to the rest of us!

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION
Today we celebrate our Golden Wed couples who have been married 50 years or more as of
December 31, 2008. Not listed are the many men and women in our congregation who celebrated 50 years of marriage prior to the death of their spouse. We honor that milestone in your marriage as well.

Fall is right around the corner, so make sure you are in the know of what’s happening in LUMY.

After a long 4-day week back at school, come out to a back to school hangout at Tucker and Ben DeHart’s house. On Friday, August 22nd, we’ll be at the DeHarts’ house for swimming, eating, and watching a movie outdoors (drive-in style, but in the grass). 7-10pm. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the event in case you need to either come late or leave early. Parents must sign out students that did not drive themselves there. We need parental help and support for this event. If you are able to help sponsor or provide food and/or drink, please let Andrew Beard know.

The fall is quickly approaching, so it is time for a new calendar and meeting. Our Fall Parent Meeting will be Sunday, August 24th. If you have a student going into 6th or 7th grade, your meeting time will be from 5-6pm in the FLC/Wesley Hall. If you have a student going into 8th-12th grade, your meeting time will be from 6:30-7:15pm also in the FLC/Wesley Hall. You do not want to miss this event. This is when you will first be able to get a fall calendar, sign up for events, buy your fall LUMY shirt, and a plethora of other things.

Rock the Light is a concert and lock -n that you don’t want to miss. We will meet and leave immediately after school on Friday, August 29th,and head down to Starlight Theatre. We’ll have a lock-in the FLC/Wesley hall that night. The next morning we will have breakfast at the church and head out to Starlight for a full day of music. The cost covers lunch and dinner on Saturday and transportation. We are looking for people to help out with breakfast on Saturday. This will be a donation of food and time to cook, or drop off (egg casseroles, biscuits and gravy etc.). We also need sponsors for either day or the lock -n! If you like music and hanging out, this is an event you will want to sponsor...it’s an easy one!

The Children’s Sunday School Lesson for August 10 comes from 2 Kings, 5:1-14. This lesson is about Naaman. God instructed him to go and dip in the river. The children will learn how a servant girl helped him get the help he needed. Be an encourager for your child when he/she is helping you. Here’s a fun song to sing with your child, to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell.” A helper I can be. A helper I can be. God can use a helper, just like you or me.
