Mark's Remarks 8/3

The late Erma Bombeck recorded the thoughts of a boy named Donald, preparing for his first day of kindergarten:
"My name is Donald, and I don't know anything. I have new underwear, a loose tooth, and I didn't sleep last night because I'm worried. What if a bell rings and a man yells, 'Where do you belong?' and I don't know? What if the trays in the cafeteria are too tall for me to reach? What if my loose tooth comes out when we have our heads down and are supposed to be quiet? Am I supposed to bleed quietly? What if I splash water on my name tag and my name disappears and no one knows who I am?"

There is something scary about every educational process. Life, in general, is difficult. Let’s not make it more difficult for our students.

We have several thousand children beginning classes this month. We have a good school board. They’re not perfect, but I sincerely doubt they’d be any better if you or I were
members. We don’t know everything, and it would be against the laws of our land for the board to tell us everything they know. The board is correcting what needs to be corrected, collecting what needs to be collected.

Our current school administrators are sincere individuals. Many, I think, are active followers of Jesus. They have our children’s best interests in their hearts.

Let the Methodists get behind the board and give them our support. Give them a call, send them a note, offer them your time. When some day our nametags disappear from this earth will anyone know who we are? Jesus will know. He’ll know your spirit, He’ll know your deeds, he’ll know your words. When the bell rings, he won’t yell, “Where do you belong?” He’ll be able to say, “Well done. You are a good and faithful servant. Enter into your peace.”

VBS 8/3

The past week has been such an exciting time! We had 430 children enrolled in Vacation Bible School. What a great responsibility God gave us....... I think we pleased him! With 161 adult and teen volunteers we successfully taught these children what serving was all about! I am excited to say that as of Sunday, July 27 at 5:30pm, we have raised $4750 to go toward our mission project PET (personal energy transportation) vehicles. For only $250 each, we are able to give someone their dignity and self respect, as we pick them up off the ground and give them a PET. With the money that has been raised, we are now able to buy 19!!!!!

Our 5th graders helped get a paper recycle bin placed on church property, just between the Ark and the playground! Be sure to invite your friends and neighbors to drop off books, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, etc, etc....to help save our earth by recycling and reusing. Also our 5th graders were able to go to Freedom House to help price toys, they cleaned up a neighbor of the church's yard with the help of Faithworks, they had a texting conference with some children in an African orphanage and so much more.

I hope that while reading this you can feel my pride as I tell you that God's hands lead us through this week. We had one child stand in front of 200+ children and recite our Bible verse, we had little children emptying their piggy banks for offering, lemonade and water stands with proceeds going to our mission, even one of our teen helpers that gave $250, of money he earned by working this summer. My heart is so very full and thankful to God for bringing me in and showing me the way to teach and lead these children in His Big Backyard!
In His Name,
Kelly Cowger

Mark's Remarks 7/27

When we have a winsome week such as this, we want to share it with you! Four to five hundred children are here for Vacation Bible School. In one class the children were coloring pictures of the baby Moses in a basket, floating in the Nile. The teacher, Kelli , asked the children, “Who is watching over baby Moses?” No one answered, “the dark Knight,” no one said, “Santa Claus,” no one said, “Jesus,” although from a minister’s point of view, that would have been technically correct.
The children answered, “Miriam.” They answered correctly. When children learn, not just the major biblical players, but even some of the mid-level figures, that is great! There was a time when it seemed our children and youth learned little of the biblical record, some of which changed world history.
I’m vastly encouraged by the content, competence and crammed rooms we’re seeing this week. Our hundred and fifty or so volunteers, our education leaders and staff are to be highly commended for their planning, their patience, and their energy!
Jesus said it, “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10)

Musical Memorial Gift 7/27

A Musical Memorial Gift to Liberty UMC
It is my honor to announce that the Liberty United Methodist Church has been given a carillon in loving memory of John Sprugel by the Sprugel family and many dear friends. This carillon is a Maas-Rowe Digital Amplified Bell and Carillon which is a fully automatic system providing traditional Swinging Bells, Pealing Bells, and Tolling Bells as well as Westminster Chimes and Hour Strikes.
This is a beautiful gift from family and friends that speaks of John’s love of God and his desire to let the community know of God’s majesty. This instrument allows for his passion to continue for many years to come. It is an instrument which can be easily moved to our new church site.
The Sprugel Family would like to invite you to a dedication of this instrument on Sunday, August 10, at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary. For more information about this instrument, please look at the music bulletin boards in the Lawson Hall area. ~ Bryan Taylor

Mark's Remarks 7/20

Being home from vacation is an awesome experience! New York is a wonderful place, but would anyone want to live there? The memories from vacation are terrific. Sometimes those memories look better in the rear view mirror than in the windshield. The same is with our memories of anything. Athletes often are far better in their memory than in reality. The old saying, “The older we are, the better we were,” has a lot of truth to it.
That same principle happens in church. When our children were little, that was “the good ole’ days” at LUMC. This week our Bible School will be a terrific time that your children will long remember. They’ll tell their children, “When I was a child in Bible School, our class met in the kitchen. We were always cooking up something!”
Many will also be saying, “That’s where I first learned about the Bible and Jesus.” If you have a child, grandchild, or a neighbor’s child that you really care about, this could be a turning point week for them. The key is you. Will you bring them?
By the way, all of you, duck in one morning this week Roam the halls, listen to the music, see the art work, watch the children. Stop by and see for yourself. Come into my office so I know you checked it out. Let me know what you think; tell someone else, also.

Musical Memorial Gift to LUMC 7/20

A Musical Memorial Gift to Liberty UMC

It is my honor to announce that the Liberty United Methodist Church has been given a carillon in loving memory of John Sprugel by the Sprugel family and many dear friends. This carillon is a Maas-Rowe Digital Amplified Bell and Carillon, which is a fully automatic system providing traditional Swinging Bells, Pealing Bells, and Tolling Bells as well as Westminster Chimes and Hour Strikes.
This instrument creates its distinctly beautiful bell sounds live at the moment they are heard by striking hand- tuned miniature bells with electric clappers. It can also play Compact Disks of digitally recorded carillons with hundreds of hymns and songs. The speakers for this system will be situated above the narthex and will provide our church family and the community with the striking of the hour and hymns that can be played at various times.
This is a beautiful gift from family and friends that speaks of John’s love of God and his desire to let the community know of God’s majesty. This instrument allows for his passion to continue for many years to come. It is an instrument which can be easily moved to our new church site.
The Sprugel family would like to invite you to a dedication of this instrument on Sunday, August 10,at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary. For more information about this instrument, please look at the music bulletin boards in the Lawson Hall area. ~ Bryan Taylor, Director of Music

Scott's Thoughts 7/13

As Pastor of Evangelism I am focused on finding the best ways to be hospitable to visitors and members, offer a comfortable and challenging worship environment, effectively communicate in a variety of mediums and ultimately tell the gospel story to all who will listen. We had a great kick-off meeting two weeks ago for our new H.O.M.E. Team and the breakout teams of Hospitality, Outreach, Marketing and Evangelism are creating action plans for implementation. It is not too late to be a part of these teams. If you missed the kick-off meeting and would like to use your gifts in these areas, please let me know.

Being hospitable, reaching out to others, promoting Liberty UMC to your friends and neighbors and telling them of the love of God is really all of our responsibilities. The church, as the body of Christ, needs all of the parts working together. We often, especially in the summer months, have difficulty finding enough ushers, communion servers, greeters and teachers. Please consider serving in one of these capacities if possible.

There are many other ways that we can help people feel at H.O.M.E. here at Liberty UMC. Here are a few that come to mind:
· Wear your nametag!
· Signup to have your picture taken for the pictorial directory.
· Make an effort to get to know at least one new person each week.
· Reach out to people you see in worship and pass in the halls that you may not recognize, and offer to help them find their way.
· Personally invite your friends, relatives, acquaintances and neighbors to worship with you and to your small group. This system is called F.R.A.N. Networking.
· Show and Tell others about your walk with Christ and your H.O.M.E. Church, Liberty UMC. Sharing your
faith with someone else will have eternal rewards!
God Bless,
Scott

Children’s Sunday School Times Every Sunday
8:55, 9:40 and 10:25
The nursery is open on Sundays from 8:00 to noon.
To make weekday nursery reservations, please call 781-4554 and leave a message at ext. 112.

Sponsor a Child to VBS envelopes are available in the literature racks. It costs about $15.00 to send a child to VBS. Thank you for your financial help in bringing these children to Christ.

The Tree house, built for the Vacation Bible School assembly area, will be auctioned off at the all-church picnic on July 27th. Want a treasured keepsake for your children or grandchildren? Join us at the picnic at noon on the 27th, be the high bidder, and you’ll get to take it home! The money will be added to our VBS mission offering.

VBS t-shirts are now on sale. Children’s sizes are $6.00, adult sizes are $7.00. Purchase yours today after worship!

Thanks today goes to Amy Steinbeck and the skit team for bringing us the message of Vacation Bible School. VBS is July 21 – 25th from 9:00 to noon. Bus transportation is available if needed; contact Sondra to receive information and paperwork.

The Sunday School lesson for July 13 is called “Jesus Calms the Storm.” It comes from Matthew 8:23-27 and Mark 4:35-41. Ask your children some “I wonder” questions: I wonder if the water splashed into the boat? I wonder how they woke up Jesus? I wonder what Jesus’ voice sounded like when he told the storm to be still?

Be a Hero for a Child . . . volunteer to work in one of our children’s ministries: Sunday School, Wednesday night “HIS Kids”, or the nursery. The commitment is for one year and all positions are job-share positions, committing to two times a month. You never have to do it alone; our LUMC Safe Sanctuary Child Protection Policy requires two-deep leadership at all times. Teachers must be members; Shepherds and helpers can be non-members. All “Heroes” must receive Safe Sanctuary training and have a background check. Call the church office or pick up a red registration form today. They are available in the literature racks.

LUMY 7/13

Wow! Thank you to those of you who are supporting this trip financially and prayerfully. On July 17th, we will be going out to a group of orphans to teach them about the love that our Lord has for them! We ask again that you will partner with us in prayer by picking up a box on the coffee tables or at the front desk.

We wanted to let you know where we are financially for this trip. Each team member has paid out of pocket and we are still in need of just a little more money. We have it figured out that if each person in our church would support us with $5.00 we would have just enough to go. Thank you for partnering with us on this mission as we have had so many people donate and make goods to bring to these people. We rejoice that God has given different people abilities that speak into the lives of people across the world, even if they are not going on this trip themselves. As Jesus commanded his disciples to go out and make disciples of all nations, we are so pleased that we are able to carry out his commandments. We thank God that our church gives us as youth the opportunity to not just reach the people locally, through Dirt Team, the food kitchen, Faithworks, but to also go where others may not be able to!! What a blessing to serve in other countries as well as our own!

Come out to LUMY tonight Sunday, July 13th, and don’t miss the After Party. Every LUMY and After Party we’ve had thus far this summer has been AMAZING. So you don’t want to miss tonight’s. LUMY is from 6-7 in the FLC/Wesley Hall for students going into 7th Grade thru recent Grads. And the After Party is 7-9pm. After LUMY finishes at 7pm we will be heading to an After Party at Rick and Kristen DeHart’s house (parents of Ben and Tucker DeHart). They live at 1542 Canterbury Lane, Liberty, MO, 64068. Their home number 816-781-7667. We will take the Yellow Bus there and back. We will leave to head back to the church about 9pm. Please be at the church to pick up your student by 9:15ish. At the DeHarts’ there will be swimming available, so bring your swimsuit and towel if you’d like to swim. There is other stuff to do besides swim, so come even if you don’t want to swim. Appropriate swimwear is required (girls- 1-piece or tank-ini). Bring a friend or two; don’t they deserve some summer fun? Let us know if you have any questions.

This summer we are having two different studies in addition to Sunday Night LUMY. One will be for students going into 9th-11th grade and the other will be for the new Seniors and recent Grads. What Others Have Said About Disciple Bible Studies

“I was in Disciple I this year and the two things I would say as a recommendation are
1.) You spend several months learning the Bible, getting your questions answered, and growing in your faith!
2.) You learn so much from and about the other people in your class, that you probably normally would not get so close to. I have made lifelong friends from the two classes I have completed. Do not ever think you need to know about the Bible to take a class. That is what the class is for!” Scott McKnight

If you’re ready for an in-depth Bible study designed to equip you with Biblical knowledge and empower you to use it in a way that will transform your life, Disciple Bible Study is for you. This Sunday, individuals who had made this commitment in the past year will be recognized and celebrated during worship. Sign-ups are beginning now for Disciple I, II and IV, which are 34-week studies beginning in September. Contact Lora Wiles for more information.

Mark's Remarks 7/6

Two weeks ago I was privileged to celebrate 30 years of appointment to a United Methodist church. Thinking back, there has been a great deal of change. Take, for example, gall bladders! The people in my first church had an epidemic of gall bladder problems. Gall bladder surgery would hospitalize a person for a week to ten days. The young clergy spent a great deal of time at the hospital, merely praying for gall bladders. No longer. Things have changed.

Annual Conference has changed. Formerly, we met at Linn Memorial in Fayette. The appropriately attired clergyman wore suits and ties. This year, the annual conference met at the convention center in Springfield (Linn Memorial is far too small). The conference sent attendees instructions that even on the first day, dress casually.
Personally, I’m like the husband in the story I’ve told you a number of times. It seems a woman bought a piece of needlework at a craft fair. On it was stitched these words, "Prayer Changes Things." Proud of the handiwork, she hung it up above the fireplace in the family room. Several days later she noticed that it was missing. She asked her husband if he knew what had happened to it. "I removed it," he replied. "Don't you believe that prayer changes things?" she asked, mystified. He responded, "Yes, I do. I believe in prayer. In fact, I believe that it changes things. I just don't happen to like change, and so I took it down."
Beginning my eighth year at Liberty, I look back over many changes in our church, and the slight possibility there are more changes coming! Thank you for the changes you have tolerated, approved and occasionally, applauded. Change is as necessary in the church as in the corporate world, education, small business or most anything.
Do you remember the old sports show Wide World of Sports and the skier who took the tumble on the introduction each week? Ron Jensen in LEADERSHIP magazine writes about it. "The skier appeared in good form as he headed down the jump, but then, for no apparent reason, he tumbled head over heels off the side of the jump, bouncing off the supporting structure. What viewers didn't know was that he chose to fall rather than finish the jump. Why? As he explained later, the jump surface had become too fast, and midway down, he realized if he completed the jump, he would land on the level ground, beyond the safe landing area, which could have been fatal. As it was, the skier suffered no more than a headache from the tumble."
It's hard for a church to change, but it's better than a fatal landing. 92% of our churches have either become static or are declining. We have chosen not to remain static. We have chosen to continue to make disciples for Jesus, impact our community, and increase our mission.

Pictorial Directory 7/6

PICTORIAL DIRECTORY COMING THIS SUMMER
In our ongoing goal of being a Radically Hospitable Church we are planning on having a new pictorial directory made. This is a very important tool for all of us and especially important for new members. Please plan to have your picture taken for our new directory. It has been 3 years since the entire church was photographed. Even if you participated in the supplement in 2007 it is important to be photographed again this year in order for the directory to be complete.

We will begin making appointments at the church on June 29th for the following photography dates:
JULY 29 – AUGUST 2 & AUGUST 4 – 9
WEEKDAY HOURS ARE 3PM – 9:30PM & SATURDAYS FROM 10 AM – 5 PM
OR
This is the easiest way to register!

To avoid standing in line, you may go to www.signup.olanmills.com and enter the church phone number, 816.781.4554 , on the left side of the screen, complete some basic information and select a date and time from
the highlighted dates on the July and August calendar.

Every family/household that is photographed will receive a complimentary directory and 8 X 10 Custom Color Portrait from Olan Mills.

Portraits will be available for purchase at the time of the sitting but you are under no obligation to purchase.
We just want to see you in the new directory!

Volunteer opportunity: We need volunteers (at least one per time period) to be hosts during the photography sessions. If you would be willing to greet people when they come for their appointments please give me a call. Thanks!

God Bless,
Scott Beard
