National Day of Prayer will be observed
Thursday, May 1
Prayer Vigil 9:30 am – 9:30 pm
In a national election year, we are often reminded to exercise our voting rights. This Thursday we have the opportunity to exercise an even more precious right; the right we have as sons and daughters of God to come before Him in prayer. Consider for a moment the weight of God’s promise to us:
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. Jeremiah 29:12
What does it mean to you to know that the Creator of the Universe desires to listen to your prayers? The thought of a prayer vigil is a bit intimidating to some. In fact, it sounds more complicated than it is. You have the opportunity to sign up to spend 30 minutes in prayer here at the church on May 1. If 30 minutes seems like a long time to pray, prompts will be available to help you make the most of your time in prayer. You can sign up for the prayer vigil after worship today outside the sanctuary or in the foyer of the Family Life Center or by contacting Lora Wiles at Lora.Wiles@lumcmo.org.
Please include the building plans and finances of this church in your prayers as we prepare to vote May 18 on the next step in our building process.
Make a date with your Father on May 1.
You will be blessed.

Mark's Remarks 4/27
A man walked into a pet store and said, "I want to return this talking bird." The owner said, "Well, sir, we guarantee that all our birds can talk, but we can't guarantee when they will talk." "No, no," the man said. "The bird talks all right, but I don't like its attitude. For six days I said to the bird, 'Can you talk?' The bird said nothing. Every morning and every night I stood in front of the cage and said, 'Can you talk?' The bird said nothing again. Finally this morning, I lost my temper and shouted at the bird, 'You stupid bird, can you talk?!' " "So, what happened?" the owner asked. "That bird looked at me and said, 'Yeah, I can talk. Can you fly?'
Have you ever been frustrated in trying to communicate with a person and struggle with it? Of course, you have! You can’t remember their name, that’s a big issue. And if you remember their name, they are not in the phone book. They’re like the bird, they perhaps have an attitude. Pretty soon you wonder if knowing them is worth your time. Yes, it’s true, some want to be contacted, some don’t, and there is not much you can do about it.
When you think about it, when you fail to wear your nametag, it’s like not having your name in the phone book. There are many around you who see your attractive visage, who would like to know you and yet are reduced to guessing games with their church friends regarding you, “You’ve seen him, he sits on the left side about half way back.” But finding out who you are is a mystery wrapped up in an enigma.
If you’re rather new to our church community, that problem is multiplied. You look great. We’ve seen you before. You may be a member here. We only see you going through the line after worship. What’s your name?
Is this important to your spiritual life? Henri Nouwen put it this way:
Casual conversation is a way of acquainting people with the details of our lives. Newcomers to a community can navigate its unfamiliar ways, guided by the small talk of neighbors. The shared conversations allow us to take steps toward intimacy -- and our prayers allow us to find new ways to become intimate not only with God, but with those in our Christian community.
It’s important! Please wear your nametag. If you tend to forget to bring it, keep it on one of the nametag boards in both foyers. Thanks.

In a recent ministry moment, prayer between husband and wife was described as the couple beginning at opposite corners of the base a triangle with God at the top. As husband and wife draw closer to God through prayer, they inevitably draw closer together as well.

This week’s Sunday School lesson comes from Psalm 23 “The Lord is my Shepherd”
Memorizing a part of the Bible may seem like a hard task. But if we use “visual aids,” they help trigger our memory. Help your child learn to recite Psalm 23 this week by learning one verse each day. Be sure to review what your child learned the previous day(s) before adding the new verse. Try these helps:
Day 1 – cotton balls – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.” (Psalm 23, NIV)
Day 2 – pillow – “He makes me lie down in green pastures,
Day 3 – bowl of water – “He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
Day 4 – bowl of soil – “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Day 5 – piece of fruit or food – “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
Day 6 – heart – “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Day 7 – Return to church with joy, to learn more about your Good Shepherd!
The last day of
“HIS Kids” is May 14th.
A “HIS Kids”
Staff Appreciation Banquet will be held
Wednesday, May 21st.

Confronted with 12-hour work days, disease, lack of resources and more civil war, after three years the United Nations moved the children to Kenya, where Gabriel lived in a refugee camp and attended school for the first time at the age of 14 years old. Almost 10 years later, Gabriel had the opportunity to immigrate to the U.S.
Come and hear Gabriel share his experiences and his vision for educating both the children in Sudan and the U.S. All youth and adults are welcome.

Mark's Remarks 4/20
I recall one evening in the winter when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. My dad and I were at the new church building site with one other layman named John Volkmer. We were cutting wood for the rafters for the first phase of a new church building. The walls were up, but the roof was not on, so the snow was actually coming in on us as we worked that evening by the light of a few bare bulbs.
That’s an experience that lasts in my heart forty some years later. I remember the night, and I recall the two men and the boy involved. It made an impression. Now there is a beautiful building there, on Missouri highway H, which continues to call all of the country area to faith and right living.
Have you seen the prayer bookmark? It’s, of course, here in your bulletin. It’s indeed a challenge to be involved in an endeavor such as building a new house of God. Our new house of God will continue to call people to Jesus long after most of us have passed to be with Him. We want the children to see our devotion in action, and more than that, become a part of it. They’ll long remember this occurrence, and perhaps they’ll hand the privilege along to their children.
Be in prayer for our whole building campaign.
We will have an all-day prayer vigil, May 1st, on behalf of this project and other
concerns. Please put that date on your calendar.

In 1987, Gabriel, along with other “lost boys and girls,” began a three-month trek on foot to Ethiopia, surviving military planes, wild animals and lack of food and water.

Scott's Thought 4/13
Scott’s Thoughts
As a response to our Lenten study of the Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, I am working on a system to expand our hospitality, outreach, marketing and evangelism ministries. One of the guiding principles will be to allow people to use their unique gifts in a meaningful way. The system is based on four teams that together create a ministry called the H.O.M.E. Team. I wanted to take this opportunity to give you the highlights of this expanded ministry and encourage you to become a part of the new H.O.M.E. Team. The teams are as follows:
H. = Hospitality Team
The Hospitality Team will be concerned with making people feel welcome within the church walls. This would include coffee fellowship, signage, greeting, Sunday secretary, ushers, greeters, hall helpers and other ministries as determined. This team’s mission is to embrace the practice of Radical Hospitality.
O. = Outreach Team
The Outreach Team will be charged with ministries outside the walls of the church. This would include calling visitors both on the telephone and in person, inactive member follow-up, and other ministries outside the local church walls as determined. The practice of Risk-Taking Mission and Service will be emphasized as a guiding principle. The Heart Teams will be a part of this ministry area.
M. = Marketing Team
The Marketing Team will be focused on promoting the ministries of Liberty United Methodist Church using up-to-date business tools such as our web site, direct mail, information technology, print advertising and other tools as determined to be useful. The primary focus for this team will be effective communication and promotion.
E. = Evangelism Team
The Evangelism Team will be focused on Intentional Faith Development through actively developing new and consistent ways to tell the good news of salvation through Christ. This team will work to develop plans for guest speakers, revivals, faith-building workshops, small group opportunities and other projects as determined.
Each team will have a team leader to coordinate the efforts and help steer the direction of their team and task force. I am sure that this plan will evolve as we go forward. If you have an interest in one of these ministry teams, please let me know. You will be hearing much more about this in the coming days. I feel extremely blessed to be a part of this church family and cherish the love and support we have for one another.
God bless,
Scott

Contemporary Worship Committee 4/13
Can YOU Help?
The Contemporary Worship Committee is fairly new and has been busy in 2008. Recently, the committee and Voices in Praise ran a concessions stand and sale table at the Mom 2 Mom sale. All the proceeds went to the family of Karlie Jo McQueen, a 2 ½-year-old girl battling cancer. The committee also chose to incorporate acolytes into the contemporary services, which began on Palm Sunday. Other exciting things include new shelves and hooks for diaper bags in the Family Life Center restrooms as well as a newly decorated worship altar.
This is all to say that the Contemporary Worship Committee could use your help! We need people to help the acolytes each week, run PowerPoint slides at 10:30am service, pass out visitor bags, decorate for special events, and brainstorm ideas to improve our worship. The more help we have, the more ways we can serve this great church.
If you’re interested in this committee please contact one of the following:
Matt Brillhart: mbrillhart@yahoo.com 836-3247
Melody Sommers: melody.sommers@lumcmo.org; 781-4554

Mission Trip to South Dakota 4/13
The Missions Work Area is planning a mission work trip (for persons 14 years or older) to Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota June 8-14. We will be working with Sicangu Lakota people of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Rosebud Reservation is located about 60 miles southeast from Pierre, South Dakota. Mission teams assist with repairs to homes, churches, shelters, youth center, daycare facilities, etc. Other tasks available are sewing, working in the Thrift Shop or Food Pantry, cooking in the hot lunch program, providing VBS at a local church, and much more. There are always varied work projects to keep team members busy.
The cost of this VIM mission trip is $200-$275, which covers food, transportation, lodging, and building materials. We can provide transportation for about 35 people. Seventeen have already signed up. We are trying to finalize our plans for transportation, food, and lodging accommodations, so if you are interested in being a part of this mission experience, please contact Everett Easley at the church office, 781-4554. A $100 application fee will be due from each participant wishing to go. This will help secure our team’s date on the calendar. A second informational meeting will be held April 27, 2008, at 4pm in Ark 2.
We will be there to appreciate, to understand, to learn, to make friends and to nurture the hope that the Lakota People have in themselves. We are looking forward to a great week where we will come together to do God's work.

Mark's Remarks 4/6
This nationally known account comes from Leadership Journal:
In Hot Springs, Arkansas, is the Morris
Antique Mall. Nothing on the inside
distinguishes this antique store from dozens like it in Hot Springs. There's a musty smell and dusty relics from the past. But if you look closely at the outside of the Morris Antique Mall, you'll see something that makes it distinct: Before it was an antique store, it was a church building.A focus on the future prevents a church from becoming a resting place for rusty relics. Our church always was and always will be a tool for God. We love it so much because it has meant so much to us in times of pain, in moments of joy, in periods of loneliness and especially in the time when we needed to know that God loved us.
On Sunday, March 30th, the Liberty United Methodist Building Committee
presented a plan for our future. It is where we are going. It’s not a short journey. It is a privilege to be among those called to enter a clean, new and inviting land!

Worship Committee
LUMC Worship Committees
Did you know our church has two worship committees? One serves the traditional services and the other serves the contemporary services. These committees keep our worship spaces beautiful, make decisions about improving church services and seek opportunities to serve LUMC.
The Contemporary Worship Committee is fairly new and has been busy in 2008. This past weekend, the committee and Voices in Praise ran a concessions stand and sale table at the Mom 2 Mom sale.

Bright Idea for Parents
Written by Sondra Buell
Reading to children is so very important, before they learn to read, and after they learn to read. Read all kinds of books: short books, chapter books, recipe books, subject books, and the Bible. Did you know . . .
· There is a great selection of Bible story books at the Mid-Continent Public Library.
· There is a wonderful selection of children’s books in our very own LUMC church library.
· I have a lot of books in my office that I’m more than willing to share with you.
We have several awesome Christian Bookstores in the KC metropolitan area.
Read more than books with your child. Also read brochures and maps, letters and cards, road signs and even the church bulletin! It opens your mind to receive and reflect just how Big and Awesome God’s Wonderful World is for us.
