The account you often hear from church members in many places is something like this:
We don’t have any young people; they went somewhere else.
We don’t have very many children, and we have NO youth group.
We work very diligently just keeping the building maintained and, when we’re gone, there won’t be anyone left to do it.
We’re just holding on by our fingernails.
Have you heard that from anyone lately? You don’t have to look very far before you find that
as the predominant mode of thought.
Our future is unique in that we are a growing church in a growing community. We have the privilege of looking to the future knowing that we are providing a place for more and more people to meet the Christ, more and more children to be trained in His word, more and more youth to be encouraged through the trials of adolescence, and more families receiving the support they need from other Christians to live in community successfully.
This morning you will hear from our building committee. This group has put in countless hours in meetings, in travel, and in consultation. Thank them, hear them, and then join them in the vision for entering a clean, new and inviting worship.

Children's Ministries 3/30
Sunday School lesson for March 30:
Today’s lesson is about two men who ran down the road to Emmaus to tell their friends the good news that Jesus is alive. Because Jesus is alive, he is always with us. Ask your child, “In what ways can we share the good news that Jesus is always with us?”
The webpage is ready – sign up your child/ren for Vacation Bible School. Go to www.lumcmo.org, click on Get Connected, then on Ministries, then on Children’s. As soon as you sign up, you’ll be able to pick up a music CD.
Did you know . . . there is a Methodist Summer Church Camp for families! If you need information, pick up a brochure outside Sondra’s office, (room 212) or go on-line at www.mocamps.org. LUMC pays ½ the camp fee up to $125.00 for church members.

Mark's Remarks 3/23
The Reverend Eugene Magee is an enthusiastic pastor who does not wear a robe. His sanctuary is plainer than most, adorned only by a cross and an American flag. Magee likes to wave his arms to emphasize important points in his sermons. Unfortunately, he is so animated that he has trouble keeping his shirttails in his trousers. To solve this he has developed the habit of periodically stuffing his shirttails back into his
trousers as inconspicuously as possible, even while he is preaching. One Easter Sunday, while admonishing the faithful with great excitement, he fished around behind his back in the usual way, and found more material than usual to push out of sight. He persisted doggedly, however. On he preached and on he stuffed. At the close of his sermon he discovered that he had about half of the American flag stuffed into his pants. He felt foolish, of course. But what would you expect? It was Easter Sunday! What pastor can help but get excited on Easter Sunday? I hope you are excited as you worship today.
May the joy of Christ’s resurrection,
May the witness of two millennia of Christendom,
May the purposefulness of his crucifixion, and
May the cleansing power of his sacrifice
change us and remake us for the works that we do!
Building Committee 3/23
March 30th marks the unveiling of the vision for our new church campus on Lightburne Road! For those who may have missed the full Building
Committee update, we will be holding three additional sessions on the
following dates to answer your questions:
Sunday, April 6th, 10:15 am – Room 109
Wednesday, April 9th, 6:00 pm – Family Life Center
Sunday, April 13th, noon – Room 220
It is an awesome opportunity and an equally immense responsibility to build a place where God will be worshipped for years to come. Doing so requires “Extravagant Generosity,” which Bishop Schnase aptly describes in his book, Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, by quoting Nelson
Henderson: “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” From now until the all-church charge conference on May 18th, we will gratefully be accepting pledges (new or increased)
toward the Imagine capital campaign. The monies raised will determine how much of Phase I of our vision can be built. Working together, we have the strength and resources to make our dreams real.

Mission Trip to South Dakota 3/23
The Missions Work Area is planning a mission work trip (for persons 14 years or older) to Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota June 8-14. We will be working with Sicangu Lakota people of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Rosebud Reservation is located about 60 miles southeast from Pierre, South Dakota. Mission teams assist with repairs to homes, churches, shelters, youth center, daycare facilities, etc. Other tasks available are sewing, working in the Thrift Shop or Food Pantry, cooking in the hot lunch program, providing VBS at a local church, and much more. There are always varied work projects to keep team members busy.
The cost of this VIM mission trip is $200-$275, which covers food, transportation, lodging, and building materials. We can provide transportation for about 35 people. Seventeen have already signed up. We are trying to finalize our plans for transportation, food, and lodging accommodations, so if you are interested in being a part of this mission experience, please contact Everett Easley at the church office, 781-4554. A $100 application fee will be due from each participant wishing to go. This will help secure our team’s date on the calendar. A second informational meeting will be held April 27, 2008, at 4pm in Ark 2.
We will be there to appreciate, to understand, to learn, to make friends and to nurture the hope that the Lakota People have in themselves. We are looking forward to a great week where we will come together to do God's work.

Today’s Bible Story comes from Luke 24:1-12
When Mary arrived at the tomb she found that Jesus was gone. Soon the world learned that Jesus had risen from the dead and that the world would never be the same again!
It’s not too late to receive the $25.00 April 15th early-bird discount for Summer Church Camp. Join in on the fun! LUMC will pay ½ your camp fee up to $125.00. Call Sondra for the camp code to put on your registration form. Register on-line at http://www.mocamps.org/ or pick up a camp newsletter/registration form by Sondra’s office.
FYI for “HIS Kids”
As you know, each month the HIS Kids reach out in love to those around us. In March, the children will be collecting new and/or gently used books for Children’s Mercy Hospital. In the next few weeks, find a time to sort through your children’s books and see if you can make a donation to this mission project. Or as you are shopping, pick up a book to donate to CMH. Bring them to Sondra Buell’s office, room 212. Thank you very much!

Mark's Remarks 3/16
I don’t know if you saw this; it was in a church periodical.
How vital is communication? How vital is understanding each other? Here's how vital:
A "snowbird" from the North wanted a week's vacation at a Florida campground, but was concerned about the accommodations. Uppermost in her mind were the toilet facilities, but she was too proper to write "toilet" so she abbreviated "bathroom commode" to "BC" and asked in her letter if the campground had its own "BC." The campground owner was baffled by this euphemism, so he showed it around, but nobody knew what it meant. Finally, someone said, "Oh, that's simple. 'BC' means 'Baptist Church.' She's asking whether the campground has its own Baptist Church." So the owner sat down and wrote:
Dear Madam,
I'm sorry about the delay in answering your letter, but I am pleased to inform you that a BC is located just nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that there is a supper planned to raise money to buy more seats. They're going to hold it in the basement of the BC. I would like to say that it pains me greatly not to be able to go more regularly, but it is surely no lack of desire on my part. As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, especially in cold weather. If you decide to come to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time, sit with you and introduce you to all the folks. Remember, this is a friendly community. Sincerely,
I’ve been asked why our Easter Offering is going to be used for an information system instead of catching up on our regular budget. Here are four reasons:
1. People who know the good things going on have a tendency to want to be a part of those good things.
Active Christians are better stewards.
2. As two hundred thirty of us have studied Bishop Schnase’s book, Five Principles…, part of radical hospitality is making sure everyone has an opportunity to know what’s happening!
3. This is important. Our budgetary shortage is a shortage of pledged funds. We are anticipating the receipt of these funds because our own members have told us that this is what they are going to do. Liberty UMs have always done what they have said they would do.
4. Communication is vital.
That is why we’re going ahead with the Easter Offering as planned. I hope you’ll find this system to be a very practical and enjoyable tool for our church. (It will also be transferable to a new location, Thanks!

Sunday School 3/16
March 16 lesson comes from Matthew 21:1-11
Many people cheered when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. They hoped he was the Messiah. Ask your child(ren) what we can do today to welcome Jesus into our lives.
Something to do at home: Have your child walk around on all fours pretending to be the donkey carrying Jesus. Put a blanket on his or her back like the friends did for Jesus. Then swap places and let your child put a blanket on your back before you “carry Jesus.”

LUMY 3/16
Today is Palm Sunday, the “kickoff” of Holy Week. We are still having LUMY that night, but we are doing things a little differently. The evening will start at 6:00pm and will be over at about 8:30pm. Since it is Holy Week, starting at 6:00pm we are going to watch The Passion of the Christ. If you have not seen this film, or if it has been awhile since you have seen it, I highly recommend you join us tonight to watch it. It is a great reminder of what our Lord and Savior went through for each of us. We are opening the whole evening up to the entire church. Please plan on being there. Please also note, the movie is rated “R” for graphic violence during the execution scene. If you or your parents are not comfortable with this, that is fine. If your family is planning on coming, please note, this is not a movie for young children. We are planning on having childcare, so we will need to know in advance if any children are coming. To preregister for childcare you must email Sondra Buell at Sondra.buell@lumcmo.org. Please let Andrew know if you have any questions.
We will not have LUMY on Easter Sunday, but please plan on being back for LUMY on March 30th. LUMY is 105 minutes (almost) every Sunday night where we kick it. If you haven’t been here in awhile, it is time to check it out again. Be there…and bring a friend. Sunday Night LUMY. (Normally) 6:30-8:15pm in the FLC/Wesley Hall.
LUMY Holy Week Schedule- There is no Flight Training on Monday, March 17th; Tuesday, March 18th; Monday, March 24th; or Tuesday, March 25th, due to Spring break and Holy Week. Though there is dinner, there will be no Youth activities on Wednesday, March 19th. There is also no LUMY on Easter Sunday, March 23rd. Please attend all the Holy Week activities that the church offers.

Mark's Remarks 3/9
The Building Committee for the planning and building of this church was quite small: L.E. (Gene) Allen, Chairman; Ted Kurek, Mrs. Olivia Roorbach, Harry Singer, Jack Wymore were the members. There were two alternate members, Dr. Robert Cole and Mrs. Phil Isley. There were no doubt numerous subcommittees.
The official opening day was December 11, 1966. That was a great day! Not only was it the first time to worship in an awesome sanctuary, but it was a day that initiated a world of witnessing, good works, kindnesses, and relationships. How far these good influences have carried over the last 42 years is known only by God.
Until 1850, our church had no real home of record. It only met formally once a month and did so in school houses, meeting halls and the county court house. Since then we’ve had a number of sites and differing building formats on the sites. The Franklin and Gallatin site, for instance, began as a small frame structure in 1856. In 1895 a brick structure with a white steeple was built at the site. In 1912, a larger sanctuary was added; its capacity was 270. By 1954, more classrooms, a chapel, and a “lounge” were added.
Our church has continually looked ahead to provide a witness to a changing, growing community.
March 30th, we’ll see a glimpse of our future. In all four worship services we’ll have renderings, explanations and dreams, in the midst of prayers, songs, and praise.
Building a fit tool for God’s work has never been an easy task. It has always, always been an act of faith and prayer. I invite you all to be in prayer at this time for our future. What part will your family have in that future? Will your grandchildren be baptized, trained, and married there?
The Stocksdales purchased our current pews. Nancy Leisinger and family provided the big walnut cross. The Sprugels furnished a classroom. The Singers furnished the sacristy. Joe and Anna Lee Clark put the petrol in the tank; they purchased the offering plates! Yes, there were many more gifts; these were just a few listed in the consecration program.
What do you think will be your history at the new location? I can “Imagine” that it will be great and gracious. “I was glad when they said let us go unto the house of the Lord.”

Mission Trip to South Dakota
The Missions Work Area is planning a mission work trip (for persons 14 years or older) to Crow Creek
Reservation in South Dakota June 8-14.
We are trying to finalize our plans for transportation, food, and lodging accommodations, so if you are interested in being a part of this mission experience, please contact Everett Easley at the church office, 781-4554, by March 17. A $100 application fee will be due from each participant wishing to go. This will help secure our team’s date on the calendar. An initial informational meeting will be held March 16, 2008, at 4pm in Ark 2.
We will be there to appreciate, to understand, to learn, to make friends and to nurture the hope that the Lakota People have in themselves. We are looking forward to a great week where we will come together to do God's work.

Holy Week
Holy Week Services
These 40 days of Lent are marked by times of personal reflection, prayer and a journey to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. These 40 days of Lent are intended to remind us of the 40 days which Christ spent in the wilderness preparing for His ministry – facing temptations that were meant to call Him away from His mission.
Maundy Thursday Service
During Holy Week, services are available to help us understand the pain and suffering Christ endured in our place so that we may have eternal life with him. Maundy Thursday services are held on Thursday, March 20, at 7:00 in the Family Life Center’s Wesley Hall. A highlight of this service is the foot-washing ritual which is the powerful symbol of Jesus’ servanthood. This act serves as a powerful witness of Jesus’ humility as He approached His death. “On the night before His death, Jesus set an example for His disciples by washing their feet, an act of humble service. He taught that strength and growth in the kingdom of God come not by power, authority, or even miracles, but by humble service. Melody Sommers will lead the Voices In Praise singers and Praise Band in music and readings highlighting this theme. Communion will also be served at this service. Come and worship together and recall the night when Christ was last gathered with his Disciples.
Good Friday Service
Good Friday has always been a solemn day for prayer, repentance, and the remembrance of Jesus’ death on the cross. It is long-held tradition, based on the Biblical texts that Jesus died on a Friday and rose from the dead on a Sunday, which would place the Last Supper on a Thursday night. This service is held in the Sanctuary with Bryan Taylor and the Chancel Choir leading the service through their cantata, “The Weeping Tree,” by composer Joseph Martin. The backdrop is a weeping tree, sacrificed to support the body of our Christ, the sacrificial lamb.
“Her magnificent trunk sawed in two, she stands transformed into a cross. Surrounded by angry shouts and the cries of mourners, she awaits the cruel embrace between wood and flesh. And now, cut from her roots, the weeping tree slowly begins to die along with the Man who hangs cursed upon her. Watered by a thousand tears, her sylvan branches once held a perfect harvest, for heaven had chosen her rugged frame to be the bearer of grace. There in her crooked and twisted arms she cradled Jesus, the Hope of the world. She who was cut and fashioned by hatred and violence became a tree of life for the world.”
Come and hear the beautiful music of choir and instruments and poignant narration as this story is brought to life. A special time at the cross will occur in this service as we seek to release our burdens and pain and thus focus on our strength…Christ our Lord.

Children's Ministries
March 9 lesson comes from John 13:1-20
In today’s story we learn that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Jesus did not come for glory or riches. He came to show us how to be humble servants. Can you think of ways that we can serve others?
An activity to do at home: Give your child a robe, a long towel, and a large bowl with or without water. Him him/her act out what Jesus did for his friends.
All children are invited to help wave Palm Branches in the Palm Branch Parade during the opening song for worship on March 16th. Meet Sondra in the narthex/foyer five minutes before the service start time to receive your palm and prepare for the parade. (Parents, you are invited to help us/join us if you have shy small children.)
Yes, children’s Sunday School classes do meet at the regular times on Easter Sunday! It will be a fun Sunday. We will release our Easter butterflies!

Contact Sondra Buell at the church office, or Kelly Cowger at 781-7470.
Like to sew?
The VBS Directors are
seeking someone who will sew a full-sized dog costume. We have the pattern. If you are interested, please contact Sondra Buell or Kelly Cowger
