Mark's Remarks 1/4/09

One of my favorite scriptures is perhaps the first one ever recorded—inscribed on a mud tablet or written on papyrus, "Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart (Psalm 90:12 NRSV). Wow, what a statement for us as we begin 2009!. Newsweek commented on it, in relationship to the need for people to use environmentally friendly transportation.

For anyone who's ever watched two empty buses sail by as he ran toward a stop, then waited an hour before packing into the next, relief may be just around the corner. With San Francisco area inventor Ken Schmier's BusTracker, a $20-$50 pager will provide up-to-the-minute info on where the next bus is, its ETA, even your odds of getting a seat. Says Schmier, "People can understand when there's a failure in the system, but they'd rather take a taxi in the first minute than the last minute."

So often, we resent every minute of which we don’t have control, then we waste the ones in our
domain. Neither does “accounting for our days” mean running like a greyhound to cover all our bases. Sometimes it’s far more memorable.

One father wrote that when he was on an outing with his family, his wife implored their daughter Molly to hurry up because there was "no time to stop and blow dandelions." In response, Molly raised what may be for a child -- perhaps for all of us -- the major philosophical issue of the new year. "Mommy," she said, "what is time for?" **
Well, what is your time for? How do you think you should use it? Does it have any import on your eternal destiny? “Lord, teach us to count our days, that we may gain a wise heart.”

**--John L. Locke, The De-Voicing of Society: Why We Don't Talk to Each Other Anymore (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1998), 172.

To my dear church family, co-workers, and friends,
Thank you very much for the special hugs, prayers, cards, meals, and tremendous support during the short 3 ½ weeks of my father’s illness. Dad passed away into the arms of Jesus on December 8th, right during my busy time of Advent Journey and the Childrens’ Christmas Program. I’ve always known that LUMC was a special church family, but it was absolutely confirmed when many dear souls stepped up and “took over” for me during this difficult time. I don’t know how to express my deep-felt gratitude, except to say God Bless you real good. I also want to thank the staff members who came to my dad’s funeral up in Nebraska. That meant more than you will ever know! With love, Sondra and Mark Buell

The Stars of Christmas”
Many thanks to the Advent Journey Committee stars: Pat Deitrick, Anne Elkins, Jane Longfellow, Kerry Stufflebean, and Barb Walters for the wonderful job they did planning and preparing for Advent Journey. Thanks to the many people who helped prepare items, and to those who made cupcakes! Thanks to the Shopkeepers, the youth who helped at the Advent Café, those who per-formed at the talent show, and the set-up and clean-up crews. Wow, everything turned out beautifully! God Bless you each and every one! May HIS star shine brightly in you all year long

In December, the “HIS Kids” Club 45 class served at the Kansas Food Kitchen. Along with serving, they delivered 300 hygiene bags. Thanks, kids, for reaching out in great love!

Building Committee 1/04/09

Did you know?
LUMC is blessed to have a dedicated and talented Building Committee. Members offer experience in building construction, financing, banking, legal, architecture, marketing, technology, communications, civil engineering, administration, cooking, spiritual and missions leadership. This group is committed to discerning God's will for our church. Every decision is given prayerful consideration and all opinions are welcomed and encouraged. If you see a member of the Building Committee, please tell them thank you and lift this group up in prayer as we move forward into 2009.
Recent Building Committee Activity:
· After reviewing 8 proposals from general contractors in November, the Building Committee interviewed three very competent finalists on Dec. 8th. We are excited and impressed by the quality and high interest of the contractors partnering with us. Some follow-up information was requested and a final recommendation will be brought to the Building Committee on January 15th for approval.
· Dake-Wells presented a summary of their findings from the follow-up master planning meetings at the committee meeting on Dec. 8th. The approximate square footage of phase I based on these findings is 62,000, an increase of 50% over our current facilities (including the Ark). Based on input from the congregation, staff and Conference advisors, the worship space in phase I will be designed to seat approximately 550 worshipers.
· Finances remain a challenge for this project and a constant prayer request. Bryan Sommers presented three revenue scenarios at our Dec. 8th meeting highlighting known and unknown variables for the committee's prayerful consideration as we make key design and scope decisions about phase I. Creativity will be required to achieve all of our objectives, particularly in the current economic climate. This will be a top priority for discussion at our January 15th meeting.

Mark's Remarks 12/21

Anyone who lives along a coastline knows the sound and sight of those huge, orange and white Coast Guard rescue helicopters that fly during summer sun and during winter storms. When fog forms and snow flies these helicopters and their rescue teams still go out. There is an early monument to these saviors on the East Coast, carved back in the nineteenth century, which proclaims that those who are dedicated to these sea rescues “have to go out,” but that they do not “have to come back.” Did you know that those words are the unofficial motto of the Coast Guard: “We have to go out. We don’t have to come back.”

Why is not that the motto of every Christian poised for ministry and mission in our world? It should be, for those words are the essence of the true “Christmas spirit.” “We have to go out. We don’t have to come back.”

That is the real Christmas spirit. Not reckless. But selfless. Not focused on making it. Focused on making a difference. The spirit that the gift of Christ imparts is not of shallow sappiness. The spirit that the gift of Christ imparts is of sublime strength.

The Christmas spirit may have been best captured by Hudson Taylor when he described the attitude of Christ this way: First it is impossible, Then it is difficult, Then it is done!
When we began working on Freedom House, it looked like an awesome project that could take years, but it needed to be done. It was difficult, then it was done. And now, the reward. As the mortgage on the building is paid off, for 2009 we’ve begun to reduce the rents for each of the ministries. For example, the rent for our IN AS MUCH food pantry will be reduced by $500/month. That will buy a lot of food.

As we look at our relocation and building program, the funding seems impossible! However, as we go into it, without pause, we’ll soon know it to be done. Things with God are rarely easy. They require faith and sacrifice. Then they are done.

family. We would like to pair existing members with new members to make this easier. The existing members would help the new members by being a contact person for questions, helping them find a Sunday School class, Bible study, or fellowship group. Children Ministries 12/21

Today in Sunday School the children will focus on verses 6 and 7 from Luke 2 – the story of the birth of Jesus. Talk to your children about baby Jesus, and sing these words with your child to the tune of “O, Christmas Tree” as you prepare for Christmas Day this week.
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day,
We celebrate a birthday.
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day,
We celebrate a birthday.
Who is the ba-by that was born?
Who is the ba-by that was born?
It was Je--sus! It was Je--sus!
O, Happy Birthday, Jesus!

The Children’s Stewardship Lesson for today comes from Peter 5:2 “Be shepherds of God’s flock . . . not greedy for money, but eager to serve.” At Christmastime it’s hard not to think about gifts and food and celebrations. Help your child focus in God’s flock and reach out to them in service of some kind.

We’re currently searching for volunteers to staff the nursery for Christmas Eve Services. Please consider volunteering a small amount of time before or after the service you will be attending, so young moms and dads can worship our Newborn King! Call Allison Jensen at 816-781-4554, ext 112 and let her know when you can help. Thank you!

After being gone to my father’s funeral, the delightful and cute program was just what I needed to fill my heart with joy. The kids did a fantastic job! Thank you to Elizabeth Anderson, Jill Davies, and Eileen Ording for directing the practice
sessions.
Thank you to Lois Jennings for helping with the cookie reception. And thank you to Mark Turnbough and my LUMC family for the beautiful plaque I received for ten years of service in Christian Education. I am honored and humbled! God Bless you each and every one!

Mark's Remarks 12/14

Bishop William Boyd Grove suggests certain words that deserve to interrupt all other words and conversation. Words like "The house is on fire!" or "The war is over!" or "Your hostage brother has been released!" These are, in his provocative words, "startling, interrupting proclamations that change everything. If the house is on fire, you run! If the war is over, you dance! If your hostage brother is released, you leave everything and go to meet him!" During Advent we prepare ourselves for another set of words that change everything, "Jesus Christ is born today.”

Mission News 12/14

On November 30, members of the LUMC Disaster Response Team joined with the Missouri Conference VIM director, Jeff Baker, and his wife, Laura, and two members of the Wentzville UMC and traveled to Baton Rouge, LA. Our job consisted of damaged tree removal. We helped several elderly people whose trees had damage or were in danger of damaging their homes. It was a great experience getting to know and help others. Our faith was renewed. Those from Liberty were Bill Moorefield, Jim Gleason, Kevin Fisher and Bridget Fox.

Mark's Remarks 12/7

This Christmas legend comes from medieval times. According to the legend, on Christmas Eve the Christ Child wanders throughout the world looking for places where he will be welcomed. Those who love him, those who hope he will visit their homes, demonstrate this by placing lighted candles in the window to invite him in. No one knows what he will look like when he comes. He might be a beggar. He might be blind. He might come as a poor and lonely child. So, devout Christians welcome into their homes everyone who knocks on their door on Christmas Day. To turn anyone away may mean rejecting the Christ Child.
Some of you are familiar with Jim Wallis. Wallis is often featured on TV news talk shows as a spokesman for the Christian community. Wallis tells about the ministry of the Sojourners Neighborhood Center in Washington, D.C., his hometown. This center stands just one‑and‑a‑half miles from the White House. On a given day three hundred families stand in line outside the center to receive a bag of groceries which is critical to getting them through the week.
Just before the doors are opened and all the people come in, all those who help prepare the food join hands and say a prayer. The prayer is often offered by Mary Glover, a sixty‑year‑old black woman who knows what it means to be poor and knows how to pray. She prays like someone who knows to whom she is talking. She has been carrying on a conversation with her Lord for many, many years. She first thanks God for another day, “Another day to serve you, Lord,” she says. And then Mary Glover may pray something like this, “Lord, we know that you’ll be coming through this line today so, Lord, help us to treat you well.”
That’s how we need to view those in need, as our brothers and sisters in Christ. Saints of God care about other people. This is not out of fear of divine punishment. Rather it is because the Spirit of Jesus lives in our heart. We see others through his eyes and that makes all the difference.

Advent Journey is an
All-Church Event

Sunday evening, Dec. 7, we’ll usher in the start of Advent (a season of waiting and preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth) with Advent Journey. This churchwide event begins with a soup bar sponsored by Student Ministries. During dinner, you’ll enjoy the musical talents of various church members (contact Melody Sommers to share your talents) and have the opportunity to shop at a Cokesbury mini-bookstore. The “big event” of the evening is the craft stations throughout the building where children create items recognizing the biblical “Stars” of the Christmas story. Numerous adult shopkeepers are needed to staff these rooms. If you enjoy children and aren’t afraid of a little glue and glitter, Sondra Buell would love to hear from you! See the Children’s Ministry page of this View for more information.
Who Will You Invite to Attend a
Christmas Event with You?
People who have no interest in attending worship on Sunday morning might respond more readily to your invitation to attend one of the many special events occurring in December. Don’t miss these opportunities for everyday evangelism:
· Do you know a child who doesn’t go to church? Bring them to Advent Journey on December 7.
· Do you have a woman in your neighborhood who might want to meet some new faces? Advent by Candlelight December 6 is a great way to do this.
· Know someone who would enjoy an evening of music performed by choir and orchestra? Worship through the Arts, Christmas by Candlelight on Dec 20, is the ticket you need.
· Is there a family in your neighborhood who doesn’t have a church home? Invite them to your church home on Christmas Eve.

Begin now to pray about someone you know who needs
what we have to offer.
All they need from you is an invitation.

Building Committee 12/7

November was a busy month for the Building Committee!

▪ Akin, Gordon, and Cowger developed engineering proposals for the parkway, turn lanes, and parking layouts in consultation with the City of Liberty and MODOT.
▪ We entered the next phase of our project with our architect, Dake Wells, as they began meeting with representatives from various Master Planning working groups to gather additional information for completion of phase one schematic design.
▪ We reviewed responses from contractors interested in joining our project team and finalized a short list to be interviewed in early December.
▪ We continued to use capital funds to reduce debt on our Lightburne property. By the end of the year we will owe less than $100,000!
▪ Charles F. Curry Real Estate Company showed our current property to prospective buyers.

As we look at the work that lies ahead, we are grateful for the ongoing prayers and financial support of so many in the congregation. We thank God also for the competent, faithful team of partners he has led us to, who share our vision of expanding His ministries and His reach to those in need throughout our community.

Mark's Remarks 11/30

In his book, The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel, tells of his conversation with Dr. Gary Habermas,
professor of theology and philosophy and author of numerous books and articles. The question Strobel posed concerned the importance of the Resurrection for Christians. He assumed he would get a stock answer about its centrality to the faith. And he did. But he got something more. Habermas went into a reflective mood in which he referred to the death of his wife Debbie in 1995 of stomach cancer. This is how Strobel describes it:"I sat on our porch," [Habermas] began, looking off to the side at nothing in particular .... My wife was upstairs dying. Except for a few weeks, she was home through it all. It was an awful time. This was the worst thing that could possibly happen."He turned and looked straight at me. "But do you know what was amazing? My students would call me ... and say, 'At a time like this, aren't you glad about the Resurrection?' As sober as those
circumstances were, I had to smile for two reasons. First, my students were trying to cheer me up with my own teaching. And second, it worked."As I would sit there, I'd picture Job, who went through all that terrible stuff and asked questions of God, but then God turned the tables and asked him a few questions."I knew if God were to come to me, I'd ask only one question: 'Lord, why is Debbie up there in bed?' And I think God would respond by asking gently, 'Gary, did I raise my Son from the dead?'"I'd say, 'Come on, Lord, I've written seven books on that topic! Of course he was raised from the dead. But I want to know about Debbie!'"I think he'd keep coming back to the same question - 'Did I raise my Son from the dead?' - until I got his point: The Resurrection says that if Jesus was raised 2,000 years ago, there's an answer to Debbie's death in 1995. And do you know what? ... If the Resurrection would get me through that, it can get me through anything. It was good for A.D. 30, and it's good for 1995; it's good for 1998, and it's good beyond that .... I believe that with all my heart. If there's a resurrection, there's a heaven. If Jesus was raised, Debbie was raised. And I will be someday, too. Then I'll see them both."

This, being the first Sunday of Advent, the emphasis is HOPE. We are people of joyous hope and great expectation! We anticipate with joy the coming of Christ, at Christmas, in our daily lives, and at the time of our demise.

The last words humans addressed to God that are recorded in the Bible: "Even so come, Lord Jesus." --Revelation 22:20

Plan Now to Attend Advent Journey Next Sunday

Advent Journey is one of the highlights of the Christmas season at LUMC. It’s a one-stop evening of food, fun, crafts and entertainment to usher in the Season of Advent. From 5-7 pm on Sunday, Dec. 7, you can enjoy a soup bar, a variety of entertainment, a trip through Cokesbury’s on-site bookstore, and craft stations galore where children will celebrate the stars of the Christmas story (see the Children’s Ministry page for more info).

Adults are needed to staff the craft stations. All supplies and instructions are provided; you’ll just need to restock supplies and provide encouragement and a helping hand to the crafters. Contact Sondra Buell to volunteer.

Use this event as an opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor without a church home to experience the fellowship of the body of Christ.

Children's Ministries 11/30

During the month of November the Sunday School children have learned that we can praise God any time, any where, and in many ways: with our words, singing songs, dancing, playing instruments. Today they will learn about praises from Psalm 148. When you get home, or sometime this week, open your home Bible and read this psalm out loud to your child/ren. Have them act it out. Have a great time praising God with your child!

As a gift of love all Sunday School children are receiving an Advent Calendar from the
Children’s Sunday School Committee. If your child hasn’t received one yet, stop by Sondra’s office, room 212. She has a few extras.

Coupled with the Advent Calendar and the countdown to Christmas which it provides, get out your Advent Wreath (or make one if you don’t have one yet – you can find directions in the literature racks). Light the first candle each day this week, open the appropriate door on the calendar, read the scripture/verse on the back of the calendar, focus your thoughts on the real meaning of Christmas, and I promise you – THIS WILL BE AN ADVENT MEMORY YOU’LL TREASURE FOREVER!
As a personal testimony, my parents’ leadership in this activity helped me learn to fall in love with Jesus!

Guess what – the Shuttle Ministry is going to provide a shuttle service from the church to the community center on December 14th – so older members of our congregation can easily attend the Children’s Christmas Program and not worry about parking or walking too far! Meet at the church at 6:00, park your car, and hop on the shuttle. The program begins at 6:30 pm. The children’s voices and the retelling of the Christmas Story will be a great blessing!

Next Sunday is Advent Journey 2008! We need a few more shopkeepers to help in the craft shops. You would need to arrive at 4:30 on the 14th. Sign up here today, or call the church office at 781-4554, ext 115.
A quick rundown of the event:
Time: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Where: Supper and musical entertainment in Wesley Hall, crafts in just about every room of the church!
What: Soup Supper, Crafts, Art Show, Talent Show/Musical Entertainment, Story time, Games for the kids, nursery those little ones 0 to 2, Cokesbury Bookstore, lots of fellowship!
Suggested cost for the crafts: $5.00 per person/$10.00 per family.
Suggested cost for the supper: $3.00 per person/$10.00 per family.
Anything else I need to know: Bring your friends and neighbors to this great fellowship event! It will prepare your hearts and homes for the real meaning of Christmas!

Drama Opportunity

Drama can be a meaningful aspect of worship, another way to express a particular message to worshipers. LUMC is looking for someone to head up a drama ministry for our contemporary services. Initially, we would like to incorporate this ministry during Advent and Christmas. If you have a passion for this type of ministry and would be willing to lead it (with help from the staff), or if you would like to be a part of such a ministry, please contact Melody Sommers at melody.sommers@lumcmo.org or call 781-4554 extension 121. Thanks.

Contemporary Christmas Choir

The final rehearsals for the Christmas choir will be this Tuesday, December 2nd, and the following Tuesday, Dec. 9th, from 6:30 – 7:30. Over 20 people are signed up and it’s still not too late to join us! If you need more information, contact Melody Sommers at 781-4554 ext. 121 or melodysommers@lumcmo.org.

Special Presentation December 14th

The 9:00 and 10:30 services will be offering a special Christmas celebration on December 14th. The 20+ member Christmas choir will sing, songs written by Melody Sommers will be shared, and Pastor Scott will bring a message about the Everlasting Father – a name for the Messiah in Isaiah 9:6. We offer this as a gift to you, the worshipers of LUMC and to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mark's Remarks 11/23

Canfield and Hansen told of a school teacher who, at Thanksgiving time, asked her class of first-graders to draw a
picture of something they were thankful for. She thought of how little these children from poor neighborhoods actually had to be thankful for, but she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys or tables with food. The teacher was taken aback with the picture Douglas handed in. It was a simple, childishly drawn hand.

But whose hand? She held it up and asked her class, “Whose hand do you think this is that Douglas drew?”
"I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food," said one child.
"A farmer," said another, "because he grows the turkeys."
Later, when the others were at work, the teacher bent over Douglas's desk and asked whose hand it was. "It's your hand, Teacher," he mumbled. She recalled that frequently at recess she had taken Douglas, a scrubby forlorn child, by the hand. She often did that with the children, but it meant so much to Douglas. **
This holiday, think of the many hands for which you are powerfully grateful. Your mother’s, your spouse’s, a grandchild’s, a lover’s. For different reasons, we have limitless gratitude for the touch of another.
How do others feel about your hands? We sometimes forget that the only hands God has are our hands. A hand stretched out in love to "one of the least of these" is a hand that reflects a thankful heart. Maya Angelou once said something very beautiful and meaningful: "Giving," she said, "liberates the soul of the believer." Are you liberated this year?

I gave a mistaken number last Sunday when I said there were 300 million abortions since Roe v. Wade. There have been, in China.
The following is a statement released this year by the Guttmacher Institute regarding US abortions.
In 2005, the U.S. abortion rate declined to 19.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44, continuing the downward trend that started after the abortion rate peaked at 29.3 in 1981, according to a new Guttmacher Institute census of U.S. abortion providers. The abortion rate is now at its lowest level since 1974. The number of abortions declined as well, to a total of 1.2 million in 2005, 25% below the all-time high of 1.6 million abortions in 1990.
Despite these declines, slightly more than one in five pregnancies ended in abortion in 2005, an indicator of how much still needs to be done to help women and their partners avoid unintended pregnancy.
We will be privileged to do all we can to support birth control and pregnancy planning for all.

Adoption Sunday 11/23

Today we celebrate adoption, as our earthly example of God’s love for us.

Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1: 5 ~ The Message

We witness a miracle every time a child enters into life.
But those who make their journey home across time and miles,
growing within the hearts of those who wait to love them,
are carried on wings of destiny and placed among us
by God’s very own hands.

___ Play an instrument or the piano, or sing during Advent Journey. (Note: this can be with a group or as an individual)

Children's Ministries 11/23

The children’s Sunday School lesson for this Sunday comes Ezra 3:10-13. The children will learn that Ezra and the people praised God when the foundations of the Temple were laid. The children will learn that it’s always appropriate to praise God – in sorrow, in joy, and in the many ordinary days which make up our life. When you get home, sit with your child and re-read these verses from your Bible. Ask your child how he/she praised God today!

Today in the children’s stewardship lesson, the children will discuss how they get money . . . from jobs, gifts, chores, etc. They will discuss why it’s important to give some of it back to God.

Did your child receive a
Children’s Bulletin when you
arrived for worship? If they didn’t, please ask for one from the ushers. These bulletins are specially made for the children; one version for preschool children and one version for elementary children. They are available every Sunday.

Each month the “HIS Kids”
focus on a different mission or service project. In November, they will be assembling hygiene kits to give to the folks who come to the Kansas Food Kitchen. Items needed include: washcloths, bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream and razors.

Mark's Remarks 11/16

Many of the ministers in Missouri are studying and meeting to radically reverse the trends of decline found in mainline denominations including ours. We live in a post-Christian society, that is a fact most of us have noticed. However, non-Christians who live in a post-Christian society are still in need of the saving love of Jesus, the Christ. Methods to reach these people, whom Jesus loves so much he died for them, are no longer methodical as we in the Methodist tradition have known them. We are learning new ways of following the Christian call. Changing the methods and places we’ve known is not easy for us. When we look at the new nature of ministry we are a little tenuous (Or we for retirement!). We have apprehension!

Joe Garagiola, former major league baseball star and TV personality, told about a time when Stan Musial came to the plate in a critical game. Musial was at the peak of his career. The opposing pitcher in the game was young and nervous. Garagiola, as the catcher, called for a fastball and the pitcher shook his head; Joe signaled for a curve and again the pitcher shook him off. He then asked for one of the pitcher's specialties and still the pitcher hesitated. So Joe paced to the mound for a conference. He said, "I've called for every pitch in the book; what do you want to throw?" "Nothing," was the pitcher's shaky reply. "I just want to hold on to the ball as long as I can."

At times, we feel like him! We have taken great leaps in our congregation to reach people for Christ. The physical new building program, reaching people for Christ, is marching to fruition. Building Committee speakers are bringing you the news every other Sunday. Please listen closely. We’re all going to reach folk for Christ, we’re going together and we’re going to do ministry, perhaps in ways that are different, always working to reach people for Christ.

Memorial Banners
It is exciting to honor the life and spirit of Nellie Crockett through our newest banners at the back of the sanctuary. They represent each of the seasonal colors of the church. Last year, the Stations of the Cross banners, above the choir, were hung on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. These were also memorial gifts from the Nellie Crockett Memorial. Special thanks to Pat Deitrick and Connie Odom-Soper for their work on this project.
Green is used to symbolize growth in Christ. Green is used for the seasons between Epiphany and the beginning of Lent (Ash Wednesday) and between Pentecost and the beginning of Advent. This season is called Ordinary Time, which means “numbered.”
Purple has been the royal color throughout history, and it is the color used for the seasons of
Advent and Lent.
Red symbolizes the precious blood of Christ and is used for Pentecost and for days commemorating martyrs.
White is used for Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and communion Sundays. White symbolizes purity and light.
In all seasons, praise the Lord!

Congratulations!
John Rogers has been honored as the
Missouri Hospital Association Auxiliarian of the Year!!

Children's Ministries 11/16

Today the children’s Sunday School Bible lesson comes from 2 Chronicles 20:13-21. The
children will learn about Jehoshaphat, who prayed and sang praises to God when his army was going to battle. We too can rely on God to help us with everything at any time! The kids will learn that worship is about being grateful every moment of our lives! Ask your child how we can praise God at church AND at home!

One goal of our Children’s Stewardship lessons is to teach children how to become good stewards. When they learn to be good stewards with the money they have and earn, they learn about planning, delayed gratification, choosing priorities,
and working for what they want. As children begin to feel good about what they have done, their desire to continue increases.
In the past few weeks we focused on raising their level of awareness of money. We’ve talked about the color of money, and what is written on the coins (In God We Trust). Today, we’ll have fun discussing how money is made.

Did your child receive a Children’s Bulletin when you arrived for worship? If they didn’t, please ask for one from the ushers. These bulletins are specially made for the children; one version for preschool children and one version for elementary children. They are
available every Sunday.

A mini workshop on making a family Advent Wreath will be held on Wednesday, November 19th. It will begin after HIS Kids at 7:15 pm and will last approximately 45 minutes. Bring your kids along to this workshop. Sondra Buell will teach you how to make a simple Advent Wreath, hand out short devotions to read with your children, and share some background information about Advent.

Are you bringing your papers to the LUMC paper recycle bin? By doing this you are helping our environment, and making money for the church!
Come and dump your paper here!!!

Here’s an opportunity for Stewardship that’s not money.
Serve the Lord through the classroom and have a great time with some children!
Our 10:25 4th/5th-grade class and our 8:55 Kindergarten class need teachers.
Contact Sondra Buell for specific details.

Ski Trip Information—note date changes
Who-this trip is for students in 8th-12th-grades (and friends)
What– We are changing the dates to March 18th-21st. The tentative plan will be to travel early on the morning of Wednesday, March 18th. We would get to Winter Park that afternoon/evening and participate in the first worship session that night. We would then ski March 19th, 20th, and 21st, and then either head back through the night on the 21st to arrive home in the early hours of Sunday the 22nd or stay the night on the 21st and head out early on Sunday the 22nd. The plans on heading back depending on how many people commit to this trip. With these new dates you will still miss school on the 18th and the half day on the 19th.
Where-Ski at Winter Park and stay at YMCA of the Rockies.
Why-To have a great time skiing/boarding, hanging out with friends, and growing closer to the Lord.
How Much- Right now the cost is approximately $500, which includes transportation, food, gear, lift tickets, housing, and retreat costs (speaker, band, etc.). If you are bringing your own ski/board gear the cost will be approximately $475, and if you are not skiing the trip will be approximately $350. This is a great time to use some of the fundraising cards to make this a little cheaper.
Due Dates- We need to know soon how many people are going and who those people are. So, we have a due date of $75 by Sunday, November 30th. Monday morning, December 1st, we are locking in our reservation. If we don’t have a financial commitment from you by Sunday, December 1st, you will not be on the list.
Once we know who is going, we’ll plan on having a meeting in December to talk some details. We are so excited about this trip and hope that everyone else is as well. Thanks and let us know if you have any questions.

The suggested donation for the craft projects is $5.00 per person or $10.00 per family. The suggested donation for the soup supper is $3.00 per person or $10.00 per family.

Besides coming and having a fabulous time on Dec. 7th, there are opportunities to get involved behind the scenes before the event, and help with the activities during the event. Call the church office or check the items below and turn this in the Sondra Buell:

I would like to:
___ Bring cupcakes for the families to decorate. I can bring ___ dozen. (Note: we’ll need these Sunday morning, Dec. 7th)
___ Donate cans of frosting. I can bring ___ cans. (Note: any flavor!)
___ Help with craft project preparations, i.e. cutting felt or yarn, sorting beads, twirling pipe cleaners, etc. (Note: these things are done at home and brought back to church)
___ Serve as a Shopkeeper the night of Advent Journey, assisting in one of the craft/project shops. (Note: you don’t have to be crafty, you just need to pass out supplies and maybe run a glue gun! You’ll also get to wear a really fun Advent Apron!)
___ Play an instrument or the piano, or sing during Advent Journey. (Note: this can be with a group or as an individual)
